VRC Not Working on New 64-Bit Windows 7 System

Hi -

 

I don't know if I've made some rookie mistake along the way here, but I just installed VRC on my new system, open the shortcut, click "Default" for my sector, and then get an "Error!" message saying "Unhandled Exception Detected," asking for permission to log the event. Clicking close just closes the program.

 

I have a Dell Studio 15 i7-720QM 1.6 Quad, 4GB RAM, 1GB VRAM, 64Bit OS, and tried running VRC in XP SP2 Compatibility Mode only to get the same results.

try to run as admin.

 

it wouldve been good to log the event, can be used to find out the issue

 

also try uninstalling completely. after uninstalling, make sure to go into your folders and remove the entire vrc folder if anything is left. then reinstall.

 

also make sure your drivers are updated.

Also make sure you have the latest version of Microsoft .NET installed.

IIRC, VRC does not use or require .NET so .NET would be an issue. However, as Ernesto mentioned, try running it as an administrator.

VRC is a native C++ app so .NET is not required. Updated video drivers with OpenGL support are.

 

Another thing to check is to make sure any firewall software you are running allows VRC to bind to and listen on port 3290 UDP. (Running as an admin may fix this too.)

Thanks for the advice. I tried running as an admin, and also ensured that I have a new version of drivers for my ATI Radeon GPU. Also did the uninstall/reinstall, and the same problem surfaced. I'll try again tomorrow....it's a fantastic program and I never had a problem with it in XP.

VRC definitely works on Win7 64 (that's what I use) ... hopefully you'll get it figured out.

Ok I emailed you the bug. thanks for the help. Interestingly enough, I installed ASRC and Vat Spy as well and they didn't work either. I know Vat-Spy had a problem on my old computer because of un-updated .NET, but its error message came after it initialized; both programs failed to even initialize.

The version of the .NET framework that comes with Vista and Win7 is more than enough for VAT-Spy, so that shouldn't be the issue.

 

If VRC, ASRC, nor VAT-Spy are working, I'm guessing it's an OpenGL support problem with your video driver. All three programs use OpenGL to render the graphics. The dump file you sent me shows that the crash occurred in the ATI driver DLL, so that supports that theory.

So the moral of the story is to upgrade drivers here. I updated my ATI Mobility Radeon Catalyst Control Center, which fixed the driver problem with OpenGL. Thanks for the help!
