Hi there,

i am just wondering if ATC in vatsim automatically issue u with a SID/STAR for any runway at any airport.i have SIDS/STARS for dublin airport, but if i was to fly to heathrow from dublin, would ATC have any SID/STAR on request for this route if u had no charts?

also on takeoff if u are following a SID could ATC vector u off on a early turn to ease traffic flow?

regards,

Peter Dungan.

Hi Peter,

generally a good pilot should be prepared on his flights, and this includes knowledge about the procedures at the departure, destination and alternate airports. With this in mind you should be able to fly these procedures, when [Mod - Happy Thoughts]igned by ATC. However, there might be situations in which this information is not available to you. In this case ATC will [Mod - Happy Thoughts]ign you vectors to final.

best regards,

Martin Georg

Hi Peter,

SIDs & STARs are freely available for every UK airport along with Standard Routes within UK airspace.

http://www.ais.org.uk You need to register on the site to access the charts but they are all there.

That site also has a Standard Route Docomeent which (in your case) specifies the airway and entry point into UK airspace and the route to follow to EGLL including the STAR.

UK controllers prefer you to file a STAR, but if you do you need to be able to fly it. If you do not include a STAR in your FP then one of two things can happen.

1) ATC will ask you if you can accept a specific STAR

2) They will give you vectors from your last en-route waypoint. This is the more likely scenario if you don't file a STAR.

ATC can at any time vector you off a SID or a STAR and you obey, unless the vectors are taking into the side of a hill

regarding the SIDS, we really do encourage you to get the charts - for the UK they are completely free to download form the site quoted. http://www.ais.org.uk/aes/pubs/aip/html/aipad2.htm is the direct link to the airport pages. What you need to file is the end waypoint of the SID - the controller will tell you which SID to use depending on the runway in use e.g. leaving EGLL to the northwest from runway 27L you would file the first waypoint as WOBUN, and the controller will give you the WOBUN2G departure. If you are completely without charts you should be given any other waypoints on the SID e.g. WOBUN2G is actually DCT BUR DCT WOBUN (you can also find the text details of the SIDS on the airport pages of www.vatsim-uk.org). Doing your homework in advance is much appreciated by the controllers, who are often very busy at EGLL.

You can be vectored off the SIDS early if it is quiet enough for you to be given a short cut. This often happens at airports where the SIDS go the long way round to avoid traffic for other airports.

Hi Peter,

Even better than the UK AIS website, would be the eurocontrol website :

EAD by Eurocontrol

This has all available charts for all the European countries, so you could also get the latest charts available for Ireland aswell as the UK. The only thing it doesn't have is the Standard Route Docomeent(SRD) for thr UK, which is handy to have access to aswell.

Also, check out the VATEIR Website here. You can get a lot of info from here about flying in Ireland. They also have a flight planning section that will provide you with valid routes to and from the UK.

If you don't have a SID/STAR, don't worry. Once you clearly state it in your plan and to the controller, you will be vectored and as Dave said, you can be vectored off the SID/STAR for traffic reasons. However, it is in your best interests to keep yourself up to date with all current procedures.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Cheers!

Paul.

While we will do our best to accommodate pilots who want vectors for a SID, please be aware that if there is a single approach or TMA controller who is covering EGLL on a top down basis, it may not be possible to give vectors due to workload. So listen in to the radio and if the r/t is already clogged with aerodrome and en-route traffic, be sensible about your requests. It really doesn't take long to get the charts or look at the Vatsim division websites. Or consider flying from one of the other London airports where the controllers will have more time to help.
