When I joined VATSIM in 2010 there was a cobbled-together client that allowed you to connect to VATSIM, but it had quite a few limitations. Also, a substantial number of the aircraft models were only semi-complete and many did not have functioning transponders modeled in the panels. But the biggest issue I encountered was scenery discrepancies. For whatever reason, there were many inconsistencies in runway and taxiway positions, but even more oddly, in the field elevations -- making other aircraft taxiing around the airfield appear to "shark-fin" as only their tails would be above ground level.
