However, I suspect rating has nothing to do with what the controller meant. Instead, I suspect you might have been connecting in vPilot's observer mode. When you click Connect in vPilot, a window like the following should appear: In that screenshot, note the checkbox for "Connect in shared cockpit mode (observer mode)" is checked. This should only be used if you're sharing a cockpit with another pilot who does not connect in that mode (and, as such, will be the pilot who communicates with ATC).
