The triangle position symbol represents a "Free Track", which means that the track is not [Mod - Happy Thoughts]ociated with a flight plan that contains a route. If the flight plan does contain a route, then the position symbol would be the diamond shape that you normally see, which represents a "Flight Plan Aided Track" or "FLAT" track.
