There is nothing worse than going to start at an airport only to connect and discover the gate is occupied and having the resulting "crash"

Is there a system to locating available gates prior to connection to Vatsim

Hi Brian,

Whilst there is not, the best piece of advise is to disable crash detection.

Yeah, there actually is! While the VATSIM data-feed is not providing you with real-time data that gets updated every 5 seconds, you can at least lower your chances of connecting at an occupied gate. I do use a brilliant freeware program called LittleNavMap: https://albar965.github.io/
When you search for an airport there and zoom in to apron-level, you'll see the positions of aircraft on the ground, based on the latest data-feed update of VATSIM.

But you should still disable crash detection, because you can never be sure that nobody will connect on top of you, while you are parked somewhere!

A number of facilities offer this feature - VATSIM UK being one. Head to https://www.vatsim.uk/airports, select any airport and scroll down for a list of free stands. I use it for Heathrow all the time
