First of all, I wondered if you can listen to any frequency on VatSim from anywhere? Eg, could I listen to LAX if I'm at London City?

Secondly, anyone doing any IFR flights this weekend around the UK? The reason I ask is because I wanted to listen to someone doing an IFR so I can build up my confidence on the radio when flying IFR, and get a better feel for it. So, it kind of relates to my first question, so if I started at an airfield, could I listen to someone flying IFR as they change frequency?

First Q - No, out of range

Second Q - Yep, you could go to say Gatwick, listen to them through ground all the way up to london control

Hi Lewis,

I would suggest that the best way to observe aircraft and their interaction with ATC is to connect as an observer using an ATC client. Have a look here http://www.vatsim-uk.org/training/index.php for information on connecting using either ASRC or VRC.

By connecting in this way, you can listen to multiple frequencies, and actually observe the 'blip' of an aircraft as they respond to ATC instructions.

Hope this helps,

Nigel
