Radar departures

Hi, yesterday when taking off from Kota Kinabalu I got the ATC instruction " expect Kinabalu radar 2 instructions". 

Is radar 2 a special kind of radar departure? 

I heard in a video of radar 5 vectoring... 

What is the signification of these numbers?

Basically, you'll be assigned headings and levels with your departure clearance as per the chart

Can find all the Aerodrome charts in Section 3.  I don't see one specifically for Radar 1 but then it doesn't necessarily follow that they're in sequential order - the numbering could be down to various different reasons...

Hello! I was probably the Radar Controller on Approach that day :P. Although there are published charts on SID for the airport, the procedure in real life for the airport is for all departures to be radar-based instead. I'm not sure why but my best guess is due to the MSA, and mountains to the right side of the airport. So we usually for departures to the east, we will give pilot a vector to the west first, then to the south, and once they gain enough altitude, we give the pilot another vector, or a direct to a waypoint.

As to why Radar One is not found, it's been phased out, as the MSA for the airport had changed: https://aip.caam.gov.my/aip pdf new/AIP SUPP/AIPSUPP 201202.pdf

Hello Marc! A pleasure that you've chosen to fly in our airspace! :)

Some airports in Malaysia use Standard Radar Departures (SRD) in place of the usual SIDs.  This can be associated with established local procedures published in the unit's Unit Of Instruction or the region's Manual of Air Traffic Services. Personally, I love it as it offers controllers greater flexibility in terms of handling departures. The heading assignment and the initial climb altitude will usually be given together with the ATC clearance prior to push and/or start.

As for the naming convention, Andreas is correct :) the numbering will change once the departure procedure has been revised or if it has seen any changes. Some notable airports that use the SRD in Malaysia are:
WBKK (Kota Kinabalu)
WBGR (Miri)
WBGG (Kuching)
WMSA (Subang)

just to name a few. 

However we realise that not all pilots are familiar with this so we will usually send a link of the chart via PM or explain it to them via PM. Hope you had a good experience in Kinabalu and we look forward to seeing you again in our neck of the woods 😄
