When filing a flight plan using software such as xpilot do I need to put in my STAR for the destination airport.  I know ATC will vector me in so is there any need?

Depends on the region you are flying!  In the US, I enter my SID/STARs.  In Australia, ATC are responsible for routing in the TMA, so no SID/STAR.

The STARs are much longer than the vectoring segment. You'll probably fly part of the STAR until ATC takes you off it and starts vectoring.
