I'm still pretty new to flight sim and one of my biggest issues right now is listening to ATC communications and picking out information (without reading text). As OBS you will not appear on anyone's radar screen or outside their aircraft. It may be a grey zone in terms of Code of Regulations, but if you do not talk to anyone and just fly from A to B, nobody should be adversely affected and you will probably learn something. On the other hand I can only encourage you to take the plunge and go for the full thing. It may not be a great idea to fly from one super busy airport to another popular airfield, so in the beginning it may be better to stick to secondary airports that are staffed. Chances are that ATC there will have some time to assist you. Make sure you add something like "RMK/NEWBIE" in the Remarks-box of your flightplan.
