You can hit the Insert key (Display Store) while doing this to set the screen centre The real life way to use the display is to have a stored setting that works most of the time so that you can judge distances and headings easily, and then just pan or zoom when you need to quickly glance at something before returning back to the saved centre (using the Display Default, Display Restore keys).
