Kathmandu VNKT, ATC request - anyone ever staffed VNKT?

Hello.

Kathmandu Tribhuvan Airport, VNKT, is one of the most exciting places to land at. Not an easy approach. No ILS, strict step descent. Touch down at over 4000 ft. I absolutely love landing there in real life. Next best, virtual.

When I lived there, I had a full view over the KTM valley from my window, on top of a hill, looking down onto the full runway, and beyond the airport, through the Southern valleys, one could spot the incoming traffic, bargaining their altitude and speed. Till late at night... those bright lights in the sky making their way down. You have all sorts of traffic - light GA, turboprops for domestic, heavier metal 747s included.

As I said, next best... virtual. Anyone interested in providing ATC for VNKT? Has anyone ever done it on VATSIM? I would be soo happy!

VNKT seems only to have ever been opened for WorldFlight on 12 Nov 2005.

THE FIRST PRIVATE (non-event) FLIGHT INTO KATHMANDU WITH ATC LANDED SAFELY!!!!!!!

Many many thanks to you all for making this possible. It was very exciting to suddenly - and unexpectedly - find William Woo online as Kathmandu Centre well before our descent (special thanks). I heard there was also some other local traffic practicing the VOR approach.

From the pilot perspective, it is quite an approach. It has quite a long, and steep at times, step descent. The runway at 4300 feet. We had a cloud layer at 6000, light crosswind. Didn't have the field in sight untill 2.5nm to go. Kathmandu does not have an ILS.

I discovered today the trick for a stress free landing is to slow down well before the initial arrival fixes....... ie configured for landing by RATAN. Obvious, I know, but have to learn somehow.

Watch this space. Will be back - with more traffic!

Great to hear you had an enjoyable flight Antonio.

I've only flown into VNKT once from VTBS, I had similar weather as you mentioned above, thick blanket of cloud around 8000ft and I was a little too fast. I had to execute a missed approach whilst my friend landed and I lined back up for the approach, was still a little fast the second time round but at least I got it down safely and the pax were ok.

Enjoy the virtual skies of Asia.
