What does UTC mean? Is it something about time zones? Is UTC the same as GMT?

UTC is Universal Time Coordinated, and basically UTC and GMT are the same. At the time of this posting the UTC time (zulu) is 17:45

There are a couple grey areas where UTC is not the same as GMT, per meaning of the terms, but it is too complicated to go there. As with everything, there is always an exception

Agreed! Like you, considered it too complicated for our needs to go there....

For the purposes of flying, UTC is the modern name for GMT. It doesn't stand for anything.

Anthony,

Just what would you say to the definition of UTC as provided for on the following website?

http://tycho.usno.navy.mil/systime.html

A figment? A fable? An urban myth? Some demented naibob's ravings?

Please check your facts........

Sure, it does. It stands for Coordinated Universal Time, a compromise for the english and french speakers of the International Telecommunications Union.

No, UTC stands for nothing. It was chosen precisely because it stands for nothing. An English abbreviation would have been CUT, and a French abbreviation would have been TUC—the two sides could not accept the other side having the official abbreviation, so UTC was chosen because it stands for nothing. Sounds just like this forum.

I've checked my facts pretty well. Timekeeping is an interest of mine. All the clocks, watches, and computers that I have are synchronized with UTC.

It's nothing, but something, because you synchronized to it? huh?

The individual letters do not represent individual words. UTC is not an abbreviation; it stands for nothing. It is itself the designation of the time standard, not just an abbreviation for the designation.

In the same way, UNICOM stands for nothing. UNICOM is the name of the entity, not an acronym for something else.

I'm sure Anthony can clearly explain how UTC doesn't stand for anything. I'm sure he can provide references to his statement, as he does will all his other statements...

I won't even go into time standards, clock frequency standards, current hot topics like "GPS Time" and the fact that UTC does play a significant role and does mean something when you are talking about timing.

So, Anthony, your references?

Anthony,

A quick search of your newsgroup memberships show you have a lot more interests than time keeping.

Some say God is all-knowing. I've yet to not find something i was looking for on Google. By simple equation we can then say Google=all knowing and God=all knowing which means Google=God.

THE END!
