Sam,

In the folder you unzipped, there's a folder called "For Plugins folder."

Take the contents out of that folder and drop them in your X-plane/Resources/plugins folder. Then start up X-plane. If you did it correctly, you'll have an XSquawkbox menu entry under the Plugins menu in X-plane.

Go to the setup audio menu item under that menu. Don't be concerned if the voice test tells you you have too much background noise - it often does. (Make sure your headset was plugged in before starting X-plane. If it was not, you'll need to quit X-plane and start again)

Now that your voice is setup position your plane at a busy airport like KLAX and choose "Connect.." from that menu. Enter in your real name, a callsign, your vatsim user id and p[Mod - Happy Thoughts]word. For server, use usa-s3.vatsim.net or usa-w2.vatsim.net. There's more servers, but that will do for now.

Then click Connect. If successful, you'll get a bunch of copyright text from the server and "Connected." You can then choose "Who's online" and see if any controllers show up. If they do, you can tune their frequency in your aircraft and listen to their transmissions. (Your aircraft battery and avionics have to be turned on)

If you want to try a voice test, go into the XSquawkBox preferences menu and set a push-to-talk button or key. I also recommend turning on the "Transmit" icon to upper-left in that same preferences dialog. Then call up the controller and ask for a radio check.

If you want to type on the text channel, make sure text ATC is disabled in the X-plane sound menu, and then hit enter on the keyboard to bring up the chat bar.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have questions.
