Hi Guys,

As the title suggest, I'm asking for advice on a new system that i plan to build.

This is the Spec

CPU : Core I7-920 http://www.dabs.com/products/intel-nehalem-i7-920-s1366-2-66ghz-5CC9.html

M/B : Asus P6T DELUXE V2 http://www.dabs.com/products/asus-s1366-intel-x58-atx-a-l-cf-sli-5D24.html

GPU : XFX nVidia GTX 285 1GB DDR3 http://www.dabs.com/products/xfx-geforce-gtx-285-648mhz-1gb-ddr3-pci-express-2-0-x16-dvi-6KR4.html

RAM : Corsair 1333MHz DDR3 - 4 GB. http://www.dabs.com/products/corsair-memory-ddr3-1333mhz-4gb-kit-of-2x240-pin-dimm-s--unbuffer-6JQN.html

3 GB http://www.dabs.com/products/corsair-memory-corsair-3gb--3-x-1gb--1333mhz-ddr3-cl9-5CYL.html?refs=4294951079-354710000-4294953664-419470000-50113

(I apologise about the links, not sure how to do the click "here" link)

Firstly, I already have a 650 watt PSU, two 320 GB hard drives and an optical drive.

Secondly, I will be using Vista 32 Bit as my OS as I already have it and don't want to spend more money on an OS. Since the OS will read around 3.2 GB RAM, and that, if i've read it correctly, the i7 RAM comes in multiples of 3 so I presume that the 3GB option is the best?

Lastly, Anyone who has something similar and runs FSX, what is the overall performance like. I'm not expecting it to run it sliders all maxed and get a jaw dropping performance, but be able to run the PMDG MD-11, Wilco Airbus Series, Aersoft scenery etc , and REX at acceptable FPS levels.

Thanks in advance

Aaron

Pretty nice system. Although I realize that you don't want to spend the money, I would highly recommend Windows 7 64-bit because you should see a drastic difference in performance.

My advice to you is to make sure you get a nice cooler and overclock your i7

I second John's reccomendation for Windows 7

Also, Get 6 GB of RAM instead of 3

Running FSX with almost all settings maxed.

Only thing I had to turn off was the car traffic, and airline and GA traffic since I always fly online.

REX is easy to run maxed out even without overclocking. The clouds seem to have little to no impact on FPS

I just did a quick flight around the New York Area in the PMDG 747 from the VC. I have Imaginesim KLGA,FSDT JFK, and Aerosoft Manhattan active. I departed JFK and flew around Manhattan at low altitude and landed back at JFK. Lowest FPS I saw was about 7 for only a second and average was around 13.FPS at JFK is 16. Remember that in FSX that even 7 fps is smooth enough to fly. New York Area, Heathrow, and Paris are the only places were I have to worry a bit about FPS. The Aerosoft Mega Airports are huge frame hogs along with Imagine Sim.Other than that Aerosoft airports are good. I have the Wilco Airbus Series,PMDG 747/MD11,LDS767,and CS757 and they all have great FPS.
