Cyrus Phillips Posted February 2, 2010 at 04:59 PM Posted February 2, 2010 at 04:59 PM After getting myself prepped for this trip by doing a USA tour, I'm going to launch my round the world trip in a Citation Mustang this week, and unless something comes up I'll be flying the first leg, KDCA-KBOS tonight. This is the tentative route I'll be flying: http://gc.kls2.com/cgi-bin/gc?PATH=kdca-kbos%0D%0Akbos-CYQX%0D%0Acyqx-bgbw%0D%0Abgbw-BIKF%0D%0Abikf-EGpd%0D%0Aegpd-EGkb%0D%0Aegkb-EDDM%0D%0AEDDM-LGAV%0D%0Algav-HECA%0D%0Aheca-HSSS%0D%0AHSSS-haab%0D%0Ahaab-htkj%0D%0Ahtkj-HUEN%0D%0Ahuen-HSSM%0D%0AHSSM-OEJN%0D%0Aoejn-OMDB%0D%0Aomdb-VAJM%0D%0Avajm-VNKT%0D%0AVNKT-vyyy%0D%0Avyyy-vtsp%0D%0Avtsp-wssl%0D%0Awssl-VVTS%0D%0Avvts-vhhh%0D%0Avhhh-zsss%0D%0Azsss-rjaa%0D%0Arjaa-rjcn%0D%0ARJCN-uhpp%0D%0Auhpp-padk%0D%0Apadk-PANC%0D%0Apanc-pajn%0D%0Apajn-ksea%0D%0Aksea-Ksfo%0D%0Aksfo-KSAN%0D%0Aksan-MMSD%0D%0Ammsd-mmmx%0D%0Ammmx-MMUN%0D%0Ammun-mroc%0D%0Amroc-sequ%0D%0Asequ-SPso%0D%0Aspso-scfa%0D%0Ascfa-SCEL%0D%0ASCEL-SAEZ%0D%0ASAEZ-sbgl%0D%0Asbgl-SNBR%0D%0ASNBR-SBMQ%0D%0Asbmq-SVED%0D%0Asved-tncm%0D%0Atncm-kmia%0D%0Akmia-kdca%0D%0A&RANGE=&PATH-COLOR=red&PATH-UNITS=nm&PATH-MINIMUM=&SPEED-GROUND=&SPEED-UNITS=kts&RANGE-STYLE=best&RANGE-COLOR=navy&MAP-STYLE=&ETOPS=90 This is going to be the third time I've done a round the world flight in Microsoft Flight Simulator, and the first time I've ever attempted a flight like this online on VATSIM. Weather for the east coast of North America is going to gradually get worse over the next few days but this weekend the weather over the far northern Atlantic should be good. So I'm going to try and get out of DC tonight, and then make it to Gander, Newfoundland, by Friday night so I can launch for Narsarsuaq on Saturday morning. PM me if you'd like to join along! It will be nice to not be alone out there on those long flights. Cheers, Cyrus
Cyrus Phillips Posted February 3, 2010 at 05:33 PM Author Posted February 3, 2010 at 05:33 PM KDCA-KBOS is completed, blasted out of DC like the Millennium Falcon leaving Mos Eisley... so we could beat the incoming snow. http://www.vataware.com/flight.cfm?id=5007152 Next is going to be Goose Bay, Canada, first leg of the Atlantic crossing. Winds are forecast to be light at CYYR Thursday evening so I'll try to schedule for then. It's forecast to be windy in Boston though.
Robbie Nauffts 1045788 Posted February 3, 2010 at 06:14 PM Posted February 3, 2010 at 06:14 PM Hahaha you're looking for better weather in Newfoundland? The Maritimes are known for fast changing weather and our saying is "If you don't like the weather outside, just go inside and wait 30 minutes" I was thinking for doing a cross-country in a prop this year before I ship out. “Aviation is not inherently dangerous, but it is terribly unforgiving.”
Cyrus Phillips Posted February 4, 2010 at 10:07 PM Author Posted February 4, 2010 at 10:07 PM Hahaha you're looking for better weather in Newfoundland? The Maritimes are known for fast changing weather and our saying is "If you don't like the weather outside, just go inside and wait 30 minutes" I was thinking for doing a cross-country in a prop this year before I ship out. Well, it's more of a matter of real-world commitments than it is about waiting for good weather in Newfoundland. Narrative of my KDCA-KBOS leg is up here: http://mustang.flight1.net/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=1579&PN=1 Winds are indeed light in Goose Bay tonight. So I'm going to go for it about 0100z. Need to pick up a bunch of supplies for the crossing before we head out. (real world reason - I need to pick up a bunch of supplies because there's a blizzard heading for DC)
Cyrus Phillips Posted February 5, 2010 at 02:36 PM Author Posted February 5, 2010 at 02:36 PM KBOS-CYYR leg is complete. Winds were light and visibility was good in Goose Bay last night.. whew. Came in right behind a Piper Cheyenne that is also on a round-the-world trip. http://www.vataware.com/flight.cfm?id=5017832 Also had a nice chat with a 767 captain that was winging his way across the Atlantic going to Paris. So Greenland is next. Today is a short work day in DC because of the incoming blizzard, so I might even go this afternoon. Current forecast for DC is for 24"+ of snow. We're very close to beating the all-time record for snowiest winter in DC history. Could be snowed in for 3-4 days. Lots of extra time to do the Atlantic crossing. I might even make it to Heathrow in time to do the Paris fly-in on the 7th.

Cyrus Phillips Posted March 1, 2010 at 04:45 PM Author Posted March 1, 2010 at 04:45 PM Flew the Heathrow to Charles De Gaulle route a few days ago. http://www.vataware.com/flight.cfm?id=5115642 Was planning on doing LFPG-EDDM this weekend but wound up not having time. So I'll try to get that in sometime this week.
Cyrus Phillips Posted March 3, 2010 at 04:47 PM Author Posted March 3, 2010 at 04:47 PM I wanted to get LFPG-EDDM out of the way, rather than lose momentum, so I flew it. It was the middle of the night in Europe so it was a very quiet flight. http://www.vataware.com/flight.cfm?id=5170246 Next stop is Athens. I'd like to fly that one in daylight hours so I'm planning on Saturday morning, EST.
Cyrus Phillips Posted January 7, 2011 at 12:17 AM Author Posted January 7, 2011 at 12:17 AM Well I made it as far as Athens last year: http://www.vataware.com/flight.cfm?id=5195551 then I wanted to do Cross The Pond, but I needed a 747 for that! So I got the PMDG 747 and spent some time training on it, and participated in Cross The Pond. And then after that I got real busy buying a house for myself and my fiancée. But now I'm in the new house, have my cockpit setup again, and I'm in between jobs so I have some extra time. Flew from Athens to Cairo this morning: http://www.vataware.com/flight.cfm?id=6911807 I may try Cairo-Aswan tonight, I want to fly in the daytime so I can actually see the Sahara. So it will be late here in DC but morning in North Africa.
Cyrus Phillips Posted January 12, 2011 at 07:53 PM Author Posted January 12, 2011 at 07:53 PM In Addis Ababa now, flying in Africa is a bit lonely on Vatsim, not much in the way of ATC or other pilots. The flight from Khartoum to Addis Ababa was a bit interesting. Addis Ababa is in a very mountainous area, and there weren't any charts I could find for the airport online for free. So, coming in I had to carefully avoid some rather high mountains. The airport itself is at an elevation of 7656 feet. The other problem was that this is one of the airports that FSX places down into a pit. So I had to bring the Mustang in rather steeply to clear the hill at the end of the runway. Fortunately the runways at HAAB are 12,000 feet long so that helped. I'll be flying to Kilamanjaro tonight at 02:00z. Would be nice to have some company so from here out I'll try to post in advance what time I'll be flying.

Cyrus Phillips Posted January 31, 2011 at 04:44 PM Author Posted January 31, 2011 at 04:44 PM Hi Frank, Would love to have you come along! Right now we're in Mumbai, next city will be Kathmandu. I have not set a time/date yet but will try to get a slot where ATC is up and it's still daylight in that part of the world - probably in the morning for US Eastern Standard Time. Graham Burgoyne 810747 Posted February 10, 2011 at 08:55 PM Posted February 10, 2011 at 08:55 PM Hey, if the timing works out, I wouldn't mind joining you on some of the hops down the west coast of N America. I'd fly either the Mustang's larger sibling, the Citation X (Total speed mismatch, even if I fly at long range cruise :-p), or Cessna Conquest II (A bit more even speed-wise). I can also get you computer flight plans for some of the legs if you want. Cheers

Cyrus Phillips Posted September 19, 2013 at 02:37 AM Author Posted September 19, 2013 at 02:37 AM Flew from Los Cabos to Mexico City last night. The weather in Mexico City was pretty nasty when we took off from Los Cabos, winds were gusting to 46 knots! But by the time we got there everything had cleared out. Still having some problems with my controls doing weird things while we're on the ground. http://www.twitch.tv/smoothvirus/c/2956744 Flying to Cancun on Saturday.
