Tim:

First, welcome to VATSIM. While the above posts are certainly pointing you in the right direction, they neglect to welcome you (I see you just joined yesterday). As with many good things, VATSIM requires a bit of a learning curve. Unless you have some experience with online flight simulation, you are going to be confused and lost. That's why VATSIM and many members have set up the Pilot Resource Center (the "PRC"). That's the link previously provided above:

http://www.vatsim.net/prc/

While it may seem overwhelming, there is a lot of information in the PRC that will help you get up and going. Everything from what pilot clients are available to how to conduct yourself online is covered in great detail. A little of your time spent reading the PRC material will save you a lot of time once you get online. The PRC will even answer questions you haven't even thought of yet.

Spend a little time reading up and I think you will be a lot less confused. If you still have questions after reading through the PRC, don't hesitate to ask for clarification or further explanation on our forums. There are a lot of people here who will be more than willing to help.

Once again, welcome to VATSIM.

Oh I'm so happy that someone else feels as lost as me. Please don't be dissuaded with my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn and have found TONS of information. I actually think that's what's stumping me. I'm having a hard time organizing what to learn "first". I have a list of questions that I was hoping I could throw out to the "universe" in hopes of organizing my learning here.

1. I'm interested in studying to be an ATC would I also get a lot of help from the PRC? (I see a great number of posts directing those who sound as confused as I feel)

2. After reading the listed information on VASTIM's ATC site I saw that I was to pick a division and a region. I completed both of these tasks and then was issued an email stating that I needed to study and take my Basic ATC exam. I'm currently studying for this exam using the materials located on the VATUSA site however they mention that I should be observing to learn. I've tried setting up VRC to observe but since I’m new I don't want to do anything that would disrupt...is there some informational that would help me smoothly transition from the Training materials to Observing another ATC on my VRC?

3. Other than the materials that I have found on VATUSA Training site can you please recommend other posts or materials that will help me with conceptualizing the role?

4. Can someone tell me if I’m going about this all wrong? With all of the information I’m finding I’m struggling to find my way. Should I be contacting ZLA, VATUSA, or VATSIM with all of my queries? Am I making this more complicated that it needs to be?

Any direction would be greatly appreciated as I want to make sure I am well schooled prior to making my way to the scopes.

Thanks in advance,

Allison

Hi Allison

If you're logged onto the network as an observer it's very difficult to disrupt things as your rating will lock you out of certain controller functions, so you're free to play around with the software and see how the changes you make within it affect how VRC looks and performs. The only thing that needs mentioning really is that within the comms panel, when you've set it up to listen in to a controller, just make sure you don't tick any of the boxes in the "TX" column as it is possible for an observer to transmit down the frequency - although to do this you'd have to have the TX box ticked, and have your designated push to talk (PTT) held down; so don't let it worry you!

The main problem I had when I first loaded VRC was that I simply couldn't get my bearings in it - you will probably know this already, but make sure you have a sector file which you can load into it otherwise when you see the blips they don't mean much.

I'm sure somebody from VATUSA can probably tighten up my answer/p[Mod - Happy Thoughts] on more advice regarding your other questions - as a member from across the pond I'm not sure how VATUSA works from a new controller's perspective.

Hi, Tim. Welcome to VATSIM!

Most of my suggestions about familiarizing yourself with your Aircraft and other tips are in the VATSIM Quick Start Guide. I believe it'll give you a great learning curb as well as tips and suggestions for observing and using resources to help you to get familiar with what to expect such as LiveATC and Flight Simulator's ATC.

Take a look at:

VATSIM Quick Start Guide:

http://www.vatsim.net/pilots/quickstart

It points out the PRC which itself can appear overwhelming when you don't know where to start. But keep in mind the PRC is like a VATSIM Bible with just about everything you can imagine included in it.

I believe you're in for a very rewarding experience. You also have a great group with whom to share your hobby.
