Randy Tyndall 1087023 Posted May 5, 2010 at 04:36 AM Posted May 5, 2010 at 04:36 AM My system was recently infected by the subject malware. I ended up deciding to do a complete Windows XP reset and reinstalling all my various flight sim files. A daunting task, but one I felt I needed to do. Over the last year and a half of this wondrous hobby we call Flight Sim I have learned so much by way of self exploration, help from many of you in these forums, other flight sim forums, and by reading. Two of the things I learned to do better was installing scenery packages and installing aircraft, especially when finding the right panel, sounds, effects, etc. So my FS9 directory had become a jumble of the old and the new and I felt I needed to reinstall to "clean house" so to speak. In the process of doing the XP reset, a backup of my C:\ Drive was created. The Malware was contained within this backup and was quite easy to remove with the right program. Now I have a backup of my C:\ Drive residing on my C:\ Drive (sans Rogues, Worms, Viruses, Etc.) I have deleted the majority of the files from that "backup" to free up space, but some files are persistent and will not let themselves "die". The pop-up that appears when trying to move them to the recycle bin states the file is in use by another program or write-protected. There are only 4 or 5 files left in that "backup" so most of my storage space is mine again, yet I do want to get rid of these last few files to delete the "backup" folder. It makes me nervous sitting there. Any ideas how I do that if Windows won't let me delete them. I want to run ultimate Defrag after I remove them to get my files better organized on my C:\ Drive Thanks Randy Tyndall - KBOI ZLA I-11/vACC Portugal P4 “A ship is always safe in the harbor. Charan Kumar Posted May 5, 2010 at 08:01 PM Posted May 5, 2010 at 08:01 PM Have you considered booting from a floppy and using large disk support, altho I am not sure you can for the current sized drives. If your BIOS allows bootable USB, then booting from a USB stick might help alleviate the problem. Then none of your files will be under lock or whatever. But before you try all that, try safe mode without networking. That turns of a lot of services and you most probably can get to your files!! Randy Tyndall 1087023 Posted May 6, 2010 at 04:05 AM Author Posted May 6, 2010 at 04:05 AM Thanks Charan I'll try that. Safe Mode is how I got in to do my reset. I should have thought of that...Doi Randy Tyndall - KBOI ZLA I-11/vACC Portugal P4 “A ship is always safe in the harbor.
