*sigh*

I know you are excited about getting your shiny new rating, but asking for traffic as a "workout" will probably give you a) no traffic or b) a ton of traffic asking for obscure things to do, leading to you getting frustrated and not being able to provide quality service to everyone.

Just saying.

Kurt,

I admire your enthusiasm and desire to control. Having said that...and please understand that it is not my intention to discourage you in any way...a better place to post this may have been in the "Come Fly With Me" Forum. While it is primarily used by pilots who want other pilots to fly with them, I really don't see any reason a controller cannot use it as well. Course I'm probably wrong and will get the same type of responses you got.

Anyway, congratulations on p[Mod - Happy Thoughts]ing your Tower exam, Kurt. Good Job

Edit: Looks like someone already moved the post to "Come Fly With Me".

Some years back when I too became a twr controller at regional airport in the UK, I did the same as you and started announcing when I would be open. I thought it would generate traffic to the airport and also allow me to try out my new rating.

My announcements did two things,

1) ensured I got no more traffic than normal, (which was very little anyway)

2) and a severe rap across the knuckles for traffic chasing

It also did my rep no good at all, the best thing is man the psosition and pilots will come, but make sure you man the posistion for a good deal of time. Staying online for 30 ins whilst you depart traffic is not going to bode well.

Welcome to VATSIM.

Kurt,

Just curious now that it's after the fact. How did your controlling go? Any traffic?
