Keith Smith Posted June 18, 2010 at 04:11 AM Posted June 18, 2010 at 04:11 AM In an effort to provide a more interactive experience, each rating now has one or more brief instructional Flash videos as part of its reference material. Each video is no more than 5 minutes in length. V1-3 and I1-8 are done. The I9 video will be released in the next few days, along with videos for the two bonus ratings (I10/11). Being just 5 minutes in length, the instructional videos are provided in addition to the written material, not as a replacement. Pilots are strongly encouraged to continue to read the detailed reference material for each rating. Feedback about the videos (private or public) is greatly encouraged. Keith Smith Posted June 18, 2010 at 04:43 PM Author Posted June 18, 2010 at 04:43 PM Thank you, I should include a disclaimer that these are not professional grade videos by any stretch of the imagination. They were recorded without the benefit of an editing suite (just a pause button), or a script. All but two of the videos were done in a single take. It would take many, many hours to integrate video from the sim, and a better, more logical flow. I reasoned, however, that something would be better than nothing. Please bear that in mind when you see the videos. If they seem a bit rushed or disorganized, it's because that's exactly what they are Still, I think it does add at least some clarity and guidance to each of the ratings, as well as introducing a break from the reams and reams of text [Mod - Happy Thoughts]ociated with all of the reference material. At the very least, I hope it gets ppl interested enough to read the written material for the subject matter where the videos fall short.

Steven Caffey Posted June 29, 2010 at 06:38 AM Posted June 29, 2010 at 06:38 AM Great job Keith! The video for the V-2 doesn't seem to be linked on the rating page, but the file is there. Robert Shearman Jr Posted July 7, 2010 at 06:07 PM Posted July 7, 2010 at 06:07 PM Newbie Question Alert. So -- I've made two flights on VATSIM so far and both have been on the east coast. However I'm sure at some point I will want to fly in and around the SoCal area. What are these pilot certs you speak of, and are they mandatory before flying in the ZLA area, and if not, what's the benefit if any (aside of course from the knowledge gained)? Thanks and apologies... Cheers, -R.
Ernesto Alvarez 818262 Posted July 7, 2010 at 06:11 PM Posted July 7, 2010 at 06:11 PM they are not mandatory. the benefit is you learn how to fly in US airspace, while some of the ZLA tutorials are focused on the ZLA area, they can pretty much be used anywhere you fly in the US
