Today we Race from Cessnock to Taree up 'the worm'

Other options include from Warnervale or Aeropelican to Taree.

YCNK - YTRE

CNK EGT SRO GCR WRD TRE

Cessnock, East Greta, Stroud Road, Gloucester, Wirradgurie, Taree.

R582B Restricted airspace (RAAF Military training area) will be [Mod - Happy Thoughts]umed active.

  • Depart Cessnock (or Warnervale or Aeropelican) at or after 0930z northbound and track to East Greta, just northwest of the West Maitland VOR.

  • Find the Maitland - Brisbane (via Taree, Port Macquarie, Coffs harbour) Railway line which exits to the NorthEast of East Greta and follow it.

  • To be within the confines (and outside the confines) of D589A (and R582B respectivley) you will need to be within 5nm of the railway centreline and below 1000ft.

Stick with the railway at below 1000ft - there are some mountains which exceed 1000ft in height in the vicinity and to add to the challenge, the Railway actually goes through a few tunnels on this route, so diligint VFR navigation is a must.

  • With the R582B unavailable you will have to maintain 1000ft till you p[Mod - Happy Thoughts] just south of Stroud Road VFR waypoint, just north of where the railway crosses the road, north of the township of Stroud.

  • From Stroud Road you are in the D589B airspace and can climb to not above 1500ft, tracking primarily Northbound.

  • The valley which has been quite restrictive till now, opens out a little as you approach and p[Mod - Happy Thoughts] the township of Gloucester where the road splits from the railway.

  • Be sure to continue following the railway and maintain 1500ft till you p[Mod - Happy Thoughts] Wirradgurie after which you can climb as high as 8500ft if you wanted to, although by this stage you are starting to get close to Taree which is our destination.

The railway goes all the way into Taree, although by this stage the Manning River may be easier to follow. Taree airfield is northeast of the town.
