Jacques Malan 995061 Posted December 13, 2010 at 05:46 AM Posted December 13, 2010 at 05:46 AM We are planning a casual flight across Africa in DC3’s and I would like to invite anybody who is interested, to join us. This will be done over a number of days, with the longest leg about 500nm. We want to make it as realistic as possible, including stuff like fuel planning to make provision for airports that don’t have fuel in real world. The route will start at Zanzibar (HTZA) and we will go through Tanzania, Uganda, Congo (DRC), Central African Republic, Chad, Nigeria, Niger, Mali and Senegal ending at Saint Lewis (GOSS) I know this is short notice, but we are planning to start on Monday (13 dec) at about 18:00z. Anybody is welcome to join for any leg that suits them, and you do not have to fly every leg. We will depart with simulator time set at 6am, and after every leg, we save the flight and continue the next leg (the next day) with the same settings. This means that we will be doing some night flying as well. The whole route should take about 24 hours, and if we do 2 hours every night, we will finish just before Christmas. Anybody who wants to fly with, please join us on teamspeak at about 17:30z on any evening for the next 10 days. Routes and planning for every flight will be discussed on teamspeak. George Frederick Stegmann Posted December 14, 2010 at 09:15 PM Posted December 14, 2010 at 09:15 PM An exciting Leg 2....we had to climb to 10500ft to clear some mountains then descended down to 8500ft for a nice scenic flight from HTKJ Kilimanjaro Intl to land at HTMW Mwanza. We were five Daks and had ZS-MCH waiting for us at the destination in his Bell 206 Jet Ranger...you can guess who the bush pilot is in the foreground...LOL Lake Victoria in the backgroud. Jacques Malan 995061 Posted December 16, 2010 at 08:13 PM Author Posted December 16, 2010 at 08:13 PM We are entereing a part of Africa where Nav Aids are very few and far between, so we can only use GPS navigation. The next 3 airports don't have fuel, so we have to load maximum fuel at Entebe. Please note that we want to start a bit earlier, and maybe get more than leg done in one evening. We want to try to be airborne at 17:30z at the latest! Route for Leg 4: Departure: Entebe (HUEN) Heading 329 degrees Distance: 152nm Arrival: Mahagi (FZKC) Route for Leg 5: Depart: FZKC Heading: 298 degrees Distance: 149nm Arrive: Watsha (FZJI) Route for Leg 6 Depart: FZJI Heading: 304 degrees Distance: 108nm Arrive: Mboki (FEFB) More to follow... Jacques Malan 995061 Posted December 17, 2010 at 09:05 PM Author Posted December 17, 2010 at 09:05 PM For Saturday evening, we will depart from FZJH (Matari). There is no fuel at this airport, so whatever was left from the previous flight will have to do. Next stop will be FEFF (Bangui M Poko) where we will be able to refuel. This is a long leg of 522nm, so let's try and get started at 16:00z (6pm) Cruising altitude 12500. Routing can be direct with GPS or via: KOT 340 (NDB) BLT 112.10 (VOR) MPK 117.30 (VOR at the destination) Jacques Malan VATSIM Supervisor
Jacques Malan 995061 Posted December 18, 2010 at 08:33 PM Author Posted December 18, 2010 at 08:33 PM That was quite a stretch, but everybody made it with plenty of fuel to spare. The METAR at the arrival airport was interesting. With the visibility down to about 2nm, and landing at night, the ILS approach onto runway 35 was rather challenging. Our next leg for Sunday will take us from FEFF (Bangui) to FKKR (Garoua) a total distance of 394nm. Deparute time at 17:00z (7pm Local) Our next leg will be to DNKN, but more about that tomorrow Jacques Malan VATSIM Supervisor
