I am new to Vatsim and would like to simulate as much of the real communications process as possible (clearance delivery, ground control, tower, departure, center....) but can't find airports or regions of the country where "controllers" are staffed in these positions. How does this work in practice if you are flying along and leave a staffed center and enter an un-staffed one?

Unfortunately your kinda on your own if you enter an unstaffed area. Theres nothing wrong with pretending to talk to ATC just for practice though

for one, events.

events aren't really the times to be learning step by step how to fly for instance, but most events include top-down coverage in the sponsoring FIR.

It's important to note that the real world communications process does not always involve talking to three separate controllers in the tower. For instance, in the wee hours of the morning, many Cl[Mod - Happy Thoughts] B airports have clearance delivery, ground control, and local control combined on one frequency or one controller working all three. Don't be discouraged that you can't get "realistic coverage" on VATSIM all the time. We just don't have the manpower to do that 24/7.

When going from a controlled center to an uncontrolled one, please keep your squawk code as originally [Mod - Happy Thoughts]igned to you in the controlled airspace. You can switch to and monitor UNICOM if you'd like, though in the en-route phase of flight, position reporting is not necessary. When you are about to re-enter controlled airspace, call the controller and follow his or her instructions.
