Brendan Lynch 1167842 Posted January 10, 2011 at 05:02 PM Posted January 10, 2011 at 05:02 PM I'll start off by saying this is not spam. I discovered on x-plane.org a tool called, you guessed it, Vatsim2X-Plane. It takes sector files and converts them into ground scenery so that you are using the same taxiways as most FS guys. Has anyone tried this before? I for one, am about to download it as soon as I finish typing this post. http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=457 Edit: Or tomorrow, I reached my maximum file downloads this morning. Ernesto Alvarez 818262 Posted January 10, 2011 at 05:19 PM Posted January 10, 2011 at 05:19 PM pilots dont use sector files, they use AFCAD's. sector files are used by ATC. some dont always match correctly to what a pilot may have, depends on the scenery developer and sector file developer if they got the coordinates right. also depends how detailed the sector file is, obviously youll want a ground or tower sector file, but they arent always as detailed as one would think. all depends on who made it and how detailed they got with it. there are no startup locations like the link mentions tho. somehow from the description, im thinking the guy meant to say AFCADS, not sector file, AFCADS have startup locations

Ernesto Alvarez 818262 Posted January 10, 2011 at 06:06 PM Posted January 10, 2011 at 06:06 PM im talkin about the description DescriptionIntroduction Are you flying online on the VATSIM network using XSquawkbox? And you are tired of having different taxiways than all the others? Tired of missing parking positions at the gates? Tired of having no taxiwaylines? Or are you a scenery designer who wants to have his scenery fully Vatsim compatible, position your gate objects autmatically at the startup location? Or do you just miss taxiway-data because maps for your airport are not available? Then this is the killer application for you! Convert Vatsim sector files (.sct) which are available on the Vatsim-Homepages for free! Put the generated data into your X-Plane envelope files (.env) or apt.dat and have a 100% VATSIM compatible layout of the airport you want to change. Or search for the custom startup locations inside the sector file and convert it directly into X-Plane's apt.dat format even with their names. Or search for taxiLINES inside the sector file, extract it and let X-Plane display it (yep, curved taxiLINES)!
Luke Kolin Posted January 10, 2011 at 06:18 PM Posted January 10, 2011 at 06:18 PM im talkin about the description It appears to extract the data from the sector files and turns them into X-Plane scenery. A sector file is primarily just a wrapper for a ton of lat/lon coordinates anyways. Cheers! Luke ... I spawn hundreds of children a day. They are daemons because they are easier to kill. Alexander Cohrs Posted January 10, 2011 at 06:23 PM Posted January 10, 2011 at 06:23 PM Will try that tonight, could be quite handy in areas where you have a ground layout in the sector file but no ground layout for X-Plane. Now it would be cool to have it the other way around as well: Take the apt.dat from X-Plane and create a sector file ground layout out of it. The reason: It's very simple and fast to create a ground layout with the World Editor for X-Plane. So if that could be converted to the sector file format, it would be a very nice way to create these ground layouts. Alex
Brendan Lynch 1167842 Posted January 10, 2011 at 08:48 PM Author Posted January 10, 2011 at 08:48 PM That would also be really cool.
Phillip Kurus Posted January 20, 2011 at 03:58 PM Posted January 20, 2011 at 03:58 PM Gate locations would be useful, although I've yet to have a problem guestimating them for both departure and arrival. There's apparently a pretty fair discrepancy even between FS9 and FSX, so everything's usually pretty relaxed--even in Germany. Thanks for the link, though! Brian Cheung 1181193 Posted March 28, 2011 at 02:38 PM Posted March 28, 2011 at 02:38 PM So did anyone ever end up giving this a try? I'm struggling to see the benefit in this plugin when I already have sceneries that have taxiway markings (and signs).
