Evan Webb 1035454 Posted January 19, 2011 at 01:32 AM Posted January 19, 2011 at 01:32 AM I'm using a gateway laptop, Windows XP Media Center Addition, and it can't connect to the internet. I go to Wireless Network Connection list, and I can see my choice of networks, so I click on mine, and have it connect, but it can't. I go to the "Set up a connection wizard" and go to "choose from a list of ISPs' and My ISP is not there. What is the problem? How do I connect it to the internet. Specs available upon request. Any help, suggestions, or tips are welcomed and much appreciated. (Hopefully this can be fixed quickly ad easily, I miss VATSIM)

Ernesto Alvarez 818262 Posted February 27, 2011 at 04:40 AM Posted February 27, 2011 at 04:40 AM the more info the better. check that you have connected your modem to your router. buying a router does not = having internet, yes you would be surprised how many people ive run into that make this mistake maybe its the hot florida weather, i dont know connect your laptop directly to your modem, make sure you actually have internet access and that your laptop can actually access it directly from the modem. reinstall/update your wireless device drivers move closer to your router and see if you can establish a connection, some things can disrupt the signal, appliances, walls, etc.. if your router was provided by your ISP, have them come out and check the router/modem, could be defective or weak signal

It doesn't surprise me at all that some people have had that problem, lol. I have in the past connected it directly to the modem, and I do get internet access. I'll try reinstalling the drivers, I don't remember if I've tried that i the past or not. When I move closer to the router I still don't get a connection. I can only get internet if it is directly connected to the modem I don't think it is a connection problem. There are three other laptops in the house that connect with no problem. Thanks for your help, Ernesto! I'll let you know what happens.
Ernesto Alvarez 818262 Posted February 27, 2011 at 06:13 AM Posted February 27, 2011 at 06:13 AM ah now thats another important clue. check with your ISP, there are some dont allow multiple PC's connecting through a single modem, dont know why, but they are out there. should tell you on your initial setup receipt, if you still have it, or if you access your account online, should say it somewhere or in their FAQ's. this shouldnt be the issue tho if the other PC's are able to connect just fine

It's NAT. The ISP cannot tell how many PCs are behind the NAT gateway. Cheers! Luke ... I spawn hundreds of children a day. They are daemons because they are easier to kill. Luca Benelli Posted February 27, 2011 at 08:17 AM Posted February 27, 2011 at 08:17 AM With an ISP in Italy you have limited connections on the router they give you... so you need to cascade another router in to get over that limit Wouldn't surprise me if it happens somewhere else...
