Board of Governors Tim Barber Posted January 19, 2011 at 01:54 AM Board of Governors Posted January 19, 2011 at 01:54 AM Why is US Air's callsign AWE (what does it stand for) and why is it called "Cactus"? -Bob. USAirways merged with America West a number of years ago. When they merged their FAA Operating Certificates in 2007, they chose to use America West's AWE "Cactus" callsign. Mark McCoy 823112 Posted February 10, 2011 at 04:30 PM Posted February 10, 2011 at 04:30 PM Actually, it's more complex than that. US Airways *IS* actually still America West.. rebranded. They didn't just choose to use the Cactus callsign, rather they chose to kill the America West "brand" and use the US Airways brand to represent the airline (as it was a more globally-appropriate name).
