Harold Rutila 974112 Posted January 30, 2011 at 10:15 PM Posted January 30, 2011 at 10:15 PM I've had some PIREPs lately that my mic volume is too low and distorted while using my St[Mod - Happy Thoughts]t H31 headset from Plantronics. I also use a DA50 adapter, and I'm wondering whether it's the headset's or the adapter's fault. Ideally I want to purchase another one, but without knowing what's broken, it's a tough choice. The squelch value on the VRC mic configuration was about 5, while my other headsets are around 30. Does anyone have advice/tips or has anyone experienced something similar? It also doesn't appear as though Plantronics is even making that headset anymore, or at least they're not showing it on their website. Does anyone have experience using the MS series or perhaps the SupraPlus series? A good, lightweight headset really makes all the difference when controlling, so I have to put some thought into this .
Bryan Wollenberg 810243 Posted January 30, 2011 at 10:47 PM Posted January 30, 2011 at 10:47 PM Hi Harold, I use the tri-star at work, but most people use the H31. While Plantronics is supposed to be an excellent brand, we regularly have trouble with them. I go through at least a headset and/or adapter or two a year, sometimes more. Of course, we use them 40+ hours a week, but even so, you would think they would last longer than 6 months - a year. Call centers and everything else use them. Having to replace the headsets that frequently seems like an expensive endeavor. I have had trouble with the tri-star I use for VATSIM too, which is obviously used considerably less. One thing you might try is replacing the voice tube. I once had an issue in which no audio was transmitting at all, and it ended up being the voice tube, even though there was absolutely no noticeable problem with it. No idea what happened to it. It might save you from having to buy a whole new headset. Bryan Wollenberg ZLA!
Harold Rutila 974112 Posted January 31, 2011 at 03:57 AM Author Posted January 31, 2011 at 03:57 AM Bryan, I actually tried putting the wrong end of the voice tube into the metal tube once and there is some damage to the really microscopic pop filter that it has on the speaking end of the tube. I'll have to order another and see if it works. That's an interesting comment about the headset, though. I guess the one main advantage to them is just how light weight they are. I can't wear my Logitech without overheating my ears (as weird as that sounds) within a matter of minutes. It drives me crazy.
Bryan Wollenberg 810243 Posted January 31, 2011 at 07:09 AM Posted January 31, 2011 at 07:09 AM That could very well be the problem, Harold. That little screen causes all sorts of nasty issues. Bryan Wollenberg ZLA!
Kyle Weber Posted March 6, 2011 at 05:39 AM Posted March 6, 2011 at 05:39 AM I've run into the same problem for a while with a DA55, have a spare tube that I've swapped on it but still occasionally get reports of soft mic volume (only really on VRC, TS3, or FSInn; Skype is usually fine). Can't find any kind of mic boost for it in Win7 and my FSInn/Windows Recording sounds are up to 100. Harold Rutila 974112 Posted March 7, 2011 at 02:51 AM Author Posted March 7, 2011 at 02:51 AM Same. And I just wasted $5 on a replacement tube that doesn't fit! It's for a newer generation headset. Meanwhile the Plantroics USB one continues to overheat my ears.
