ARTCC sub-domains

I came up with an idea that I think could be a minor change, yet probably be a big help to people. I personally am constantly forgetting the ARTCC's websites (as some are .org, .net, some begin with 'z,' etc). But it's another 30 seconds going to the VATUSA page, and finding it there to click on. Why not instead create some sub-domains for the ARTCC's? It's really really easy, and the majority of hosting providers have actually a place that will set it up for you.

For example, if you go to:

schedules.atavirtual.com it re-routes you to the www.atavirtual.com schedules page. So in VATUSA's sense, make it like:

zau.vatusa.org or zbw.vatusa.org

Then just set it up to forward you to the page. It's really not as complicated as I'm probably explaining it to be, and I'd be more then happy to help set them up if your really interested. Thanks!

I think it's a good idea. Really simple to do.

Even if the subdomain is a pseudo-pointer, would make it easier.

For example, www.zjxartcc.org would STILL be hosted in the same place, but a new address of www.vatusa.org/zjx could POINT to the server when clicked on.

I think its a great idea.

Doing it as a subdirectory of the vatusa.org domain (as the second link above) would require a page with a redirect, which would be generate a bit more traffic.

Adding it as a third tier to the primary domain (zjx.vatusa.org) would require a DNS change, which would be cleaner, and faster. But I agree.. that would be a great idea.

Would only need to specifiy on most domains that .org/whatever is re-directed. I can do it with my personal site without a redirect page.

Not trying to be smart..but why not just save them in your FAVORITES?? Although...I could see if you use a bunch of different computers this could be an issue.

Or it could be done with URL rewriting, which wouldn't require the actual folder and redirect page to be created. I actually prefer this over using subdomains, since if using subdomains, if an ARTCC changes their URL, we have to wait for DNS propagation, during which time the site is effectively down at that URL. If we use URL rewrites, changes take effect immediately.

Hi guys, I'll p[Mod - Happy Thoughts] this idea on to Craig, he's handling the website right now with his team of other contributors... We'll see if we can get this going.

This is a GREAT idea! I really hope it gets going, that would make finding a website so much easier.

Brad, just curious, why would it require a DNS change? I'm not sure what the VATUSA website is like, but I have a free hosting service with cpanel. It lets you set up any redirect (zob.vatusa.org) to any website you want, without having to change the DNS. Does VATUSA use something different?

Why not just go to vatusa.org and click on the big link on the right for your ARTCC??

Like I said above, its not going to make a m[Mod - Happy Thoughts]ive difference in your life, but it certainly doesn't hurt to have them, and saves you 30 seconds...

If you guys use CPanel (from your hosting provider) then it's very, very easy to do...email me if you do and aren't sure.

It takes about 2 seconds to set up a subdomain to forward to another, it's a very simple task.

The people running the site are well aware of how to do this, don't worry. They obviously have their reasons for not doing it though. I have never had a problem adding them to my favorites. Takes all of two seconds.

Thank you,

well...I think its great that you're offering to help Nick! Can anyone elaborate on what reasons thay have for not making it even easier - other than the ole' "we have our reasons" answer? I think its a great idea Nick, yes, adding to my favorites or going to the VATUSA site are pretty simple, but we're not hurting anyone by doing as you suggested.

Your welcome Mr. Black. Anything to help you.

As to why. Your guess is as good as mine. I have nothing to do with it. I'm only offering my thoughts and opinions, just as everyone else here is.

Nope and I wasn't "Given" anything. I earned the "job" after a careful screening of all applicants.

After working in that capacity for a couple months, I resigned for reasons I don't care to discuss here.

Thank you,
