Neil Corman 881190 Posted December 30, 2005 at 05:37 PM Posted December 30, 2005 at 05:37 PM For Immediate Release VATUSA Announces Training Academy WASHINGTON DC December 28 – VATUSA today announced the plans for the VATUSA Training Academy, which will provide a centralized training process for all new air traffic controllers in the United States. The academy will be modeled similar to the FAA Part 141 training guidelines, with the key focus of standardization. Upon joining VATUSA as a controller, students will be automatically enrolled in the academy. While at the academy students will learn the basics of air traffic control, and receive an introduction to the tools they will use while on the job. Once familiar with these concepts, students will then receive hands-on instruction with Delivery, Ground, and Tower Control leading to their first over the shoulder (OTS) exam while at the academy. This hands-on controlling experience in a closed environment will provide students with the practical skills they need prior to joining an Air Traffic Control Center (ARTCC). Once a student has graduated they will select an ARTCC to join, where they will continue their training with localized instruction of the procedures for the specific area. “The concept of the training academy is a giant step forward for this region†Neil C President and CEO, Virtual Frontier www.virtualfrontier.org
Alex Goldstein 857161 Posted December 30, 2005 at 06:55 PM Posted December 30, 2005 at 06:55 PM I like the idea very much....well anyways to start off the questions...What about current STU controllers, are they going to be transferred to the academy? Or is this plan only to take effect for new controllers? Alex Goldstein VFR Trips - Coming Soon The first online community specifically geared towards the common private pilot. Terry Kocher 919807 Posted December 30, 2005 at 09:08 PM Posted December 30, 2005 at 09:08 PM I also really really like this idea, because it would elliminate text-only controllers at local ARTCC's, also it would allow local instructors to teach students faster and easier because of the level knowledge about ASRC basics and the knowledge of fundamental ATC procedures that the students will already have. This is a great move on VATUSA's part!

Dennis Stanek 876522 Posted January 3, 2006 at 06:24 PM Posted January 3, 2006 at 06:24 PM As an Instructor, my opinion is "Outside the Box" thinking. THREE CHEERS to Jim and his staff. This will make my job easier on the ARTCC level. One question: How will the Academy be staffed by Instructors? Will there be permanent personnel [Mod - Happy Thoughts]igned? Or will the [Mod - Happy Thoughts]ignments be on a rotational basis? Alot of questions! EXCELLENT job!!! My hat is off to VATUSA! Dennis, this is something that is being discussed now in the VATUSA staff forum and what the best way to do things will be. Once we get a bit closer, we can answer this better. Kevin Finch Posted March 19, 2006 at 03:41 PM Posted March 19, 2006 at 03:41 PM With the appointment of Jason Sutton, what's the latest news on the Academy? I think the original plan was to have it up and running by the end of Q1. Cheers.
Jason Sutton 879715 Posted March 19, 2006 at 04:55 PM Posted March 19, 2006 at 04:55 PM That is still the plan, although it might run a little into the first of April. As I've told anyone that has asked, Ive jumped head first into finishing the academy and getting it off the ground. There is still a bit more to do and acomplish but I think we're going to come close to original date of completion, and I think the majority will be satisfied with the end result. Stay tuned for more details.
