Thomas Wilkerson 956737 Posted January 30, 2006 at 04:11 AM Posted January 30, 2006 at 04:11 AM Hi all, I am a rookie to VATSIM. I have an XP machine running FS2004 with integrated graphics and 512mb ram. The other computer is a Windows 98se machine. Both have access to cable internet via a router with the XP machine given higher priority for the broadband. I was getting ready to install the needed software to participate and I was wondering what the best arrangement would be: Do I have to intall Squakbox 3 and the voice client on the same machine as FS? Should I install Squakbox 3 and the voice client on the 98 machine so as to not use any of the XP machines limited RAM? Will the slower broadband speed on the 98 machine be an impairment? Your advice is appeciated.
Matthew Kreilein 881422 Posted January 30, 2006 at 05:34 AM Posted January 30, 2006 at 05:34 AM OK, you can install SB3 on the machine running FS9 and run both from the same box. If you want, you can purchase an application called WideFS along with a full key for the file FSUIPC (~$40 total), which you can find out about here http://www.schiratti.com/dowson.html If you do that, you can do the following... 1) Set up WideFS as mentioned in the installation instructions for it and ensure you have connectivity. 2) Install SB3 on the FS9 computer, pick the option saying "i am installing on 2 computers and this one is running FS9" or whatever. 3) Install SB3 on the other machine, pick "i am installing on 2 computers and this will run SB3" or whatever. Both choices are clear. 4) Start WideFS, start FS9 and sit at a gate somewhere. 5) When you see "Connected", then run SB3 and make sure you can connect. 6) The voice client is built into SB3 so there's nothing separate to set up with that regard. Hope that points you the right way a bit. If not, then the instructions with all those will get you farther along. I run SB3, Web browser, Active Sky 6, and various other things on a laptop and use WideFS and then run FS9 on my desktop (better CPU and dedicated to just FS9) and it's GREAT!!!
