Hi Robert, and welcome back to VATSIM. No, you're not really doing anything wrong, except posting the same/similar thing in multiple locations, and since most of your questions deal with hardware, your post should have really gone in the Hardware Help forum. I've already asked that it be moved. You've asked a lot of hardware questions in a pilot client forum, which may reduce the answers somewhat. More likely, though, lots of folks (myself included) may use older systems and not be qualified to give you the best, cutting edge advice. And, it was only less than two hours.... Some of us have to put our kids and wives to bed...

That said, the Hardware Help forum is a good place for you to look. Pilot Discussions might be a good place to search, too.

Some of those things are personal preference, though, based on what you want to fly and what kind of flying you want to do. If all you want to do is putt around a gr[Mod - Happy Thoughts] strip in a Piper Cub, and you don't care how great the gr[Mod - Happy Thoughts] looks, you don't need a heck of a strong machine, no special video card, and a simple yoke may be OK. Definitely not true if you want to fly more realistic aircraft like PMDG add on aircraft, use weather rendering and scenery add ons. I typically fly p[Mod - Happy Thoughts]enger jets on VATSIM, so have a dual monitor setup and a Saitek Pro yoke. I don't know all the ins and outs of the hardware, but in general, the prevalent advice for FSX is to get the fastest processor you can afford. Get 2 (or more) of the largest monitors your wife will let you have. I love the Saitek Pro yoke and throttle combo. I have an i5 chip, but most would recommend an i7 these days. You may need to read up on overclocking, too.... I am not an expert on graphics cards, so others could/should chime in on that.

Which simulator you use is also based on personal preference. I'd say the 2 market leaders out there are FSX and X-plane. Last I knew, X-plane allowed you to download and use a demo for a while. Lots of folks love it. If you used to use FS9, the transition to FSX might be easier. If you go that route, make sure you get the Gold edition. Look on Ebay or Amazon, it's cheap as heck (though no longer sold or supported by Microsoft). If you go FSX, vPilot is the way to go. After that, the sky is the limit in terms of aircraft and scenery and AI you want to buy or download. Again, it's personal preference. There's some great freeware out there, but if you want more realism, get your wallet out. Maybe you want to start out with freeware to dip your toes, and then when you're feeling comfortable, ramp it up by adding some payware to your collection.

Some suggestions for freeware (Google will help you find it all):

AI: WOAI (World of AI)

Weather: FSrealWX Pro (or Lite)

Situational Awareness: VATSpy (there are dozens of others, too -- search on our forums for situational awareness)

Aircraft and Liveries: Lots out there. Google is your friend for research as well as finding and downloading them.

I should compile a list of all the stuff I have....

Lots of folks will have lots of suggestions on good payware (and you can search our forums for suggestions) but a few that come to mind:

Aircraft: Anything made by PMDG, though the 737NGX and 777 seem to be most common these days

Weather: Active Sky Next (ASN)

Textures: REX

Again, welcome back and good luck. Lots of reading to do.

And, maybe most importantly, if you are married, NEVER, EVER disclose how much you are spending on all this stuff to your wife!!!
