Fred Clausen Posted March 14, 2006 at 04:48 PM Posted March 14, 2006 at 04:48 PM Gents - I have an interesting problem on my hands. I submitted a FOIA request sometime last year, and about the only part of my FOIA request that was granted was access to ZAB SOPs and the ZAB sector maps, in the .GMP file format. Through much effort, and a real nice friend, I have a program that will read the .GMP file and display the contents. However, it is next to useless to me because I'd like to export that information for inclusion in a sct file readable by a controller client. I've done a TON of research on this (google is failing me, first time for everything), and about the only things I know is that this file is an ACES geomap file, and the data is in a "binary" format. I have looked at perhaps reverse engineering the GMP file, but that is going to be next to impossible. I believe my situation is complicated because the FAA FOIA office did not send me a second file, which apparently "describes" the contents of the GMP file, which means I don't have things like lat/lon. I believe based on my research that I can use high level math (trig) to figure out lat/lons, but I need to be able to read the file format Does anyone have experience with this stuff? I'd greatly appreciate the help. Fred Clausen, vZAB ATM ZAB real life
Andrew Miller 873677 Posted March 14, 2006 at 09:26 PM Posted March 14, 2006 at 09:26 PM Fred, this is probably different than what you want, but in Groundmaker there is a function that will let you import a navadata cycle. So you just download the lastest navadata information and import it into groundmaker and it makes the sector file for you. Andrew Miller
Kevin Kan Posted March 14, 2006 at 09:30 PM Posted March 14, 2006 at 09:30 PM I believe hes asking more along the lines of how to grab the lat/longs to draw the boudary of a actual sector. Not the airport. Like my GOAT? Too bad, it's mine. My airline flying at the speed of normal

Not the airport. Right. I have the lines that are present on a real sector map (range rings, MVAs, airports where appropriate, relevant intersections for the sectors) and thats what I'm after. Gerry Hattendorf 935415 Posted March 14, 2006 at 11:18 PM Posted March 14, 2006 at 11:18 PM Hey Fred, I'm in the same boat you are, except I'm also trying to extract the tracon boundries as well. I'm not exactly sure, but I read a thread some time ago about the world sector file, used exclusively by Sups and Admins. I honestly have no idea whats defined in them, but it might be a start. Happy hunting, as I continue my search for the holy grail as well! Let me know what you find, and I'll do the same. Nate Johns Posted March 15, 2006 at 02:04 AM Posted March 15, 2006 at 02:04 AM ME, Possible problem with the GMP file, and its [Mod - Happy Thoughts]ociation with ACES. Unless you have an updated version (and if you do, please e-mail me, mine only operates under Win 98), basically, the .nm file that ACES opens up contains the data that you can easily reference Lat/Long coords for individual lines. Now, I'm sure that the .gmp files have that same information, but when using GeoMap, when running an inquiry about a line or object, it wants to open and reference ACES and the .nm file information first. Does it appear that the .gmp is encrypted? Or just written in a different code that is not possible to view with typical windows software? ~Nate Nate Johns "All things are difficult before they are easy." - Dr. Thomas Fuller, Gnomologia, 1732
