I'm able to hear atc and other pilots clear as a bell but I can't speak to them. I'm using x-plane and a mac. I have done the mic test and it works and I've gone into preferences with the "push to talk key" and yet nobody seems to hear me. Do I have to have a microphone instead on the built in one in the mac? Any help would be appreciated.javascript:emoticon(':?')

If the mike test works, then using the built in one shouldn't be a major problem. But it's definitely far better to use a headset with its own mike so that the mike is always close to your mouth. The other thing to check is that you've got all the relevant ports open correctly on your router/firewall if you have one.

I can type text (I'm pretty quick with typing but flying and typing replies to atc is too much) and atc gets it and I see the responses but it's frustrating not to be able to talk. ATC and other aircraft are heard crystal clear. I've tried opening other suggested ports but nothing has worked thus far. javascript:emoticon(':?')

When you press the push-to-talk key, is ATC and other aircraft even getting a 'carrier wave'? Ie. does the receive light on their SB or ASRC screens light up? If it does then it's a mic issue, as for mikes for macs (jeez, dont say that with a mouth full of popcorn), try searching ebay or something similar.
