Federal officials are investigating a third close call in less than a week involving planes at O'Hare International Airport.

Whoops! Let's see: two counts of simultaneous departures on intersecting runways and one case of an aircraft taxiing across the runway in front of a rolling departure.

Y'know, I could make a sarcastic comment about all the trouble the FAA is going to to nix "position & hold" right now, but...

You weren't on an A320 that had a rejected takeoff, were you?

Y'know... in the back of my mind as I was posting this thread originally, I momentarily thought "What day was the field trip from the convention on?"

What troubles me more is that these three make 7 runway incursions at O'Hare just for '06 -- the previous four were all controller error. That's as many as the entire year of 2005, and only 5 of those were controller error.

Nope, MD83 for me. But it makes me wonder if we were the party taking the runway. I noticed we took off from 4L at taxiway T10, which, from what I understand, is common practice at O'Hare.

Interesting, as I just landed at ORD the other day on VATSIM and shortly after I touched down in my MD80, a 767 or 777 taxied across the runway in front of me. MAX Braking and steering to the left side of the runway got me by without hitting him. It was an ugly situation, as I would have been unable to do a go around at the point this acft entered the runway.

ATC had told this guy to Taxi to 32L at Taxiway T (I think), which would have kept him off 27L, which is where the incident took place.

Fly Safe! Have Fun!

Wow, interesting. I flew back to Atlanta from the convention on an A320 on the 26th, but we didn't have a rejected take off.

Flying through Atlanta and Miami this past week, Weds to be exact, TIPH was in used. Actually, come to think of it, the RJ pilots from CAE-ATL said CAE is using it still as well, just they didnt bother at 6am as traffic isn't an issue. Just an FYI I suppose, could be a sign that waivor process is in use. Silly FAA policy change anyways. . . whatever.

Good deal. Hopefully the FAA will focus on utilizing some of the modernization technology that they have been talking about for years, instead of utilizing some half-[Mod - Happy Thoughts] thought out policy letter. . . then again, I may be dreaming.

I know I heard somewhere that certain facilitys would get waivers for TIPH that allowed them to keep orderly flow.

That's true. Some facilities -- according to their volume/facility needs; probably every Cl[Mod - Happy Thoughts] B airport I'd imagine -- have applied for & received waivers allowing them to continue TIPH ops. But I know for a fact that it has been suspended at other smaller fields (well at least one anyway: my home airport, KOGD -- read the actual signed memo from the Ogden ATM).

Check out March 20th's and March 18th's post on the Main Bang

http://themainbang.typepad.com/blog/2006/03/index.html deals with the waivers being issued for TIPH. It seems the small airports will be the ones screwed out of it, while the big ones (where most of the incursions take place) will get the waivers.

Not only that, but look at some of the responses from the people it will affect the most -- controllers.
