Ethan Klapper 884347 Posted March 30, 2006 at 01:26 AM Posted March 30, 2006 at 01:26 AM I have a question that probably only real-world controllers would be able to answer. Now that flight service stations are owned and operated by Lockeed Martin, did the employees have to forfeit their union membership? I know NATCA is 110% against privatization, so I was curious as to whether they allow privatized employees to be part of their union. Thanks ahead of time! Ethan Klapper 884347 Posted March 30, 2006 at 02:04 AM Author Posted March 30, 2006 at 02:04 AM So these people never were part of NATCA, even under the FAA? They belonged to this NAATS union? Steven Perry Posted March 30, 2006 at 02:32 AM Posted March 30, 2006 at 02:32 AM It would appear that the answer is "no." I'm not a flight service specialist so I don't know any of the history behind it. NAATS was against A76, contracting all the FSSs out to LM, as much as NATCA is against privatization of ATC. It's not like the FSS people voluntarily got up and left their jobs with the FAA to go work for LM. Whether you work for Uncle Sam or a private company makes little difference to unions though... NATCA is affiliated with the AFL-CIO, which doesn't represent strictly civil servants! SP Steven Perry VATSIM Supervisor
Mark Zameda 810257 Posted March 30, 2006 at 02:44 AM Posted March 30, 2006 at 02:44 AM Steven's right. NATCA represents aviation industry employees, not just air traffic controllers. The membership majority for NATCA is FAA Air traffic controllers, however we do have airways specialists, private ATCers, and about a dozen other professionals that get their representation from NATCA. NATCA was against the privatization of ALL ATC services from day 1. Simply go to NATCA's website on www.natca.net, and you'll see enough links on privatization that will answer all your questions. It has to start somewhere, they privatized Flight service stations with barely a squeak to the public eye... Mark Zameda VATUSA6
