Rico Van Dijk 959629 Posted April 4, 2006 at 09:34 PM Posted April 4, 2006 at 09:34 PM Hi everyone, I have a question about a special mission I accepted from the virtual pilot [Mod - Happy Thoughts]ociation. My goal is to depart in a heli (EC135) from "Flushing" NY (KFLU/FLU) according to AirNav.com in the first place the airport doesn't exist anymore. In fact, it is an indefinate closed airport. whish I can immegine, sinds I did a little reaserch.. http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:Fmrq-Hjsc1cJ:www.airnav.com/airport/FLU+flushing+airport&hl=nl&gl=nl&ct=clnk&cd=6 http://www.forgotten-ny.com/STREET%20SCENES/newflushingairport/yonder2.html http://members.tripod.com/Airfields_freeman/NY/Airfields_NY_NY_Queens.htm I did find outdated procedures, and If I look to some maps the airboundary structure is still existing. Are these still in use? or maybe some general procedures about departing from a closed airport (even if it is a puddle of mud) or departing on a off airport location in the near presence of a large airfield (B-cl[Mod - Happy Thoughts] airspace) Or is it just an illegal operation? If so I wouldn’t fly the mission like this. I think it is not fair to violate your rules. Then I request a departure from la Guardia or something. Keith Smith Posted April 4, 2006 at 09:46 PM Posted April 4, 2006 at 09:46 PM Flushing is a closed airport, very close to JFK. Since you're in a heli, I [Mod - Happy Thoughts]ume you could conduct operations in and out of there, treating it as an off-field landing. Just make sure you have permission from JFK tower, as you'll be in the surface based bravo airspace for that field.
Kevin Kan Posted April 5, 2006 at 03:53 AM Posted April 5, 2006 at 03:53 AM Actually If you see LGA Tower online call him, if hes not on call the next controller covering LGA Tower Control Zone. Like keith said it'll be treated as off-field. Might get some restrictions like remain east of rwy 31 if traffic coming in and out. Like my GOAT? Too bad, it's mine. Matthew Kreilein 881422 Posted April 5, 2006 at 10:58 PM Posted April 5, 2006 at 10:58 PM OK, yes, Flushing is closed. It's REALLY close to KLGA and that's probably why. Would ZNY stop you from using it for choppers...no. We allow MetroHelo to use Floyd Bennett all the time for chopper ops. As far as departing goes, you'll have to get an old set of charts (the ZNY Helicopter route area has them). Get the "main map" one and look for "helo-main-T4". http://www.nyartcc.org/route_central/helicopter/index.htm You'll see that Flushing isn't in the Bravo until 1500 ft and then up to 7000. So, could you depart without calling ATC if under 1500, yes. However, you could basicaly ONLY go on like a 090 heading...AWAY from KLGA. If you turn West, North, or South, THEN we're gonna come hollering as KLGA uses 13/31 all the time. So, if you see KLGA TWR or some other NY ATC on and you're gonna go towards the city, North, or South of KFLU...call for Bravo clearance. Rico Van Dijk 959629 Posted April 6, 2006 at 07:31 AM Author Posted April 6, 2006 at 07:31 AM Ok, thanks for the reply's. When the mission officer saw this picures He laughs and stated: Oh dear, this mission has brought me no end of headaches like no other mission. Firstly Rico the mission was started from a helipad in NY city that didn't actually exist in flight sim. So, I had to make a change for pirep's. And at a pilot's suggestion, I moved it to KFLU which was nearby, and yet still in flight sim. Seems strange to me that it is in the state you present when it was closed long before Flight Sim was released. I'll depart my mission IFR from KGLA.. thanks for the help! Rico.
