ASRC Observer hearing voice traffic?

Hi all,

I'm completely new to VATSIM, and heck flying and ATC in general. Gimme a few months before you see me in the skies or behind the scope, though.

I've been doing lots of observation in ASRC of ZID, since I live in CVG territory. I have set up the frequencies for CVG's controllers and Indy Center. I can observe and receive the text ATC traffic just fine. But I was wondering if it's possible for an Observer to hear the voice comm traffic also? It seems I'm missing quite a bit of the action there.

Thanks for any pointers. It might also just be me, forgetting something I read already. Some of the docs are a little... disjoint, spread between ASRC's site, VATSIM, VATUSA, and ZID's site. :/

Nevermind... I can hear voice now. Dunno what changed, really. I just happened to add Chicago Center to my list, and all kinds of voice traffic started up.

Maybe the Indy crowd doesn't use voice all that much? I know text is the required manner. But some of the ATC text traffic I was observing was implying voice traffic I didn't hear (like a pilot repeating instructions from Indy Center that I didn't see Indy Center send in text, nor hear in voice).

Oh well...

Hey Scott,

First off, welcome to VATSIM Hope you enjoy whenever you do start to fly and/or control.

Yes, it is possible to listen to voice comms as an observer. For the situation you described, I would suggest looking at the voice server and channel you have set up for each individual frequency (Indy Center, CVG Approach). If you see one of these positions staffed, ask the control for his particular voice channel. If the two of you have conflicting channels, you could still see the text conversations (since you're on that frequency), but its up to each controller as to what his particular server and channel are for that day. Usually each ARTCC has a particular way they want their controllers to set this up, so maybe take a look around ZID's site and see if you can find an SOP or something of the like which mentions this.

Hope this helps, and again, welcome aboard!

Yes Scott we try to use voice most of the time if we can at Indy Center. Like Joey in the last post mentioned, get in touch with one of our controllers that are online, we can provide any [Mod - Happy Thoughts]istance you require.
