Thomas Derbyshire Posted October 12, 2016 at 12:02 PM Posted October 12, 2016 at 12:02 PM Hi guys, Quick question, what is the correct phraseology to describe my parking position to the controller when calling for clearance in the General aviation parking area? Do I just say "[callsign] is Piper Comanche, GA parking with information X request IFR clearance to X". I guess my question is do I need to tell them what parking number I am at? If so it's not a stand technically, so do I just say "General aviation parking 11" Might be a silly question but I love to fly my Comanche a lot and have only used it once so far on VATSIM. I'm also right now eyeing up the Real Air Turbine Duke V2. Thanks
1275389 Posted October 12, 2016 at 12:18 PM Posted October 12, 2016 at 12:18 PM Hey Thomas, welcome to VATSIM! I would say that how you call depends on where you are flying. In the US, we have a lot of "defined" GA parking areas. Someone might be parked at "Signature [FBO]." We also have parking that is simply just known as GA parking. What helps differentiate if there are more than one is the taxiway that lies next to it. "We're parking off of taxiway E." If you can't define it that way, and it doesn't have a name, "GA parking" should suffice. I don't really know how it is for other countries. Hope this helps! Thomas Derbyshire Posted October 12, 2016 at 02:32 PM Author Posted October 12, 2016 at 02:32 PM ok thanks I'm flying in the UK and Europe at the moment. Sounds like a bit of a mixed bag then, I'll scope out any unique identifiers on the charts and try to reference my exact position as best I can. Board of Governors Simon Kelsey Posted October 13, 2016 at 07:18 AM Board of Governors Posted October 13, 2016 at 07:18 AM Hi Thomas, In the UK, CAP413 is the reference when it comes to phraseology. As mentioned above, just describe where you are with reference to the ground chart (bear in mind that in real life -- the point is so that the controller knows where to look on the airfield to be able to see you). Unless there is an actual stand number published on the chart, the "Parking 11" etc stuff is just internal FS data which doesn't really mean anything to a controller. However, there may be a GA apron marked as such on the charts, different aprons will usually have different letters ("GABCD on the Bravo apron..."), or failing that you can describe where you are on the airfield ("at the flying school" "on the pumps" "south side hangars" etc etc). So something like "GABCD, Piper Comanche by the south side hangars, information Bravo QNH 1022, request start up" might be a basic initial call but each airfield will have slightly different procedures depending on whether they usually give the airways clearance at the stand or during taxi/at the hold.
