Dace Nicmane Posted January 10, 2017 at 03:55 PM Posted January 10, 2017 at 03:55 PM A couple of questions to people who make the event banners. Do you use Photoshop for this? Second, for photos that are not your own, do you ask for permission to use it? I've got plenty of ideas and want to try my hand at this.
Camden Bruno Posted January 10, 2017 at 05:00 PM Posted January 10, 2017 at 05:00 PM Hi Dace, When I was an Events Coordinator, I used PhotoShop and always asked for permission to use photos that were not mine. Cam B. VATSIM Supervisor

In some countries you can use photos under policies such as "Fair Use", in some countries using someone else's work is highly restricted by law. It's not an easy topic. When I create banners for events, I usually either ask permission or check the license under which a picture was published. Andrew Ogden Posted January 12, 2017 at 12:17 AM Posted January 12, 2017 at 12:17 AM For VATNZ, we make our own photos, we have a few aircraft spotters and expert simulator artists who take screenshots and fantastic plane photographs for us. Here is an example: This was used for our Flight Club - Kaikoura event we had a couple of months ago. One of our pilots took that for us and we ended up using it. Dace Nicmane Posted January 12, 2017 at 05:17 PM Author Posted January 12, 2017 at 05:17 PM So in your experience, is it easy to get the author's permission? I've only ever asked once and got no reply, so I'm concerned. As for Photoshop, anyone uses their cloud subscription? Is this what people do nowadays? Andrew Ogden Posted January 12, 2017 at 11:53 PM Posted January 12, 2017 at 11:53 PM So in your experience, is it easy to get the author's permission? I've never asked myself, we mostly take our own with the exception of old photos we already had permission to use. As for Photoshop, anyone uses their cloud subscription? Is this what people do nowadays? I have an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription which grants me access to every single adobe product. That is what I use for adobe photoshop. If you are not a student it costs $80AUD a month, but I get mine for $35AUD a month. Ernesto Alvarez 818262 Posted January 13, 2017 at 12:33 AM Posted January 13, 2017 at 12:33 AM when in doubt if something might be covered under copyright or fair use, ask. save yourself a headache or two, especially if you plan to do them for VATSIM purposes. you can even contact the VATGOV's who may help you figure it out better safe then sorry, avoid unintentional copyright infringement, happens far too often online and far too many are misinformed in thinking its "ok" to do dont forget to give the proper credits as well
