Joaquin Blanco Posted March 16, 2017 at 02:44 PM Posted March 16, 2017 at 02:44 PM When are we going to introduce a bit of variety and organize an event or events covering some airports in Central/South America. The South Atlantic is part of the same "Pond". Get the impression that our members in Southern parts don't seem to get any major events and probably and with good reason feel somewhat left out. If there aren't enough controllers in these areas, surely members from other areas could fill some of the posts. There are also many good airport sceneries and challenging terrain and approaches. Although I am not a controller I would certainly be willing to help in any other way I can. Regards Best regards Joaquin Blanco
Daniel Hawton Posted March 16, 2017 at 06:37 PM Posted March 16, 2017 at 06:37 PM Nothing prevents them from engaging or creating events to cross the pond on the southern side.
Ernesto Alvarez 818262 Posted March 16, 2017 at 08:33 PM Posted March 16, 2017 at 08:33 PM those areas have been going through constant reorganization, but if they have the event staff in place, itd be best to shoot them an email. its not VATSIM itself that organizes these events. CTP wasnt even started by any single FIR, rather a few individuals got together and started it. much like FNO, which was also not started by VATUSA as some would think, it was started by American Virtual Airline (joinava.org) and got very popular amongs pilots and controllers, VATUSA kept it going. as already mentioned above, nothing prevents anyone on the network from creating them. build the interest and go for it
Trent Hopkinson Posted March 17, 2017 at 01:17 AM Posted March 17, 2017 at 01:17 AM A couple of weeks ago, a group that isn't the Cross the Pond organizers, ran an event between Frankfurt and KJFK - with German, Netherlands, England, Ireland, Shanwick, Gander, Moncton Boston and ZNY controllers online. If enough people are deployed to engage enough controllers in the correct FIR's and timeframes, then anyone can set up an event anywhere. I remember back in 2014 or so, there was a "Cross the Pacific" between Asia (China, South Korea, Japan) to USA (San Fransisco, LAX etc) with the full ATC over the ZOA oceanic region over 14 hours of event time. Never got hosted a second time to my Knowledge, even though the event was, to me, a success. Cross the Eurasia was also quite interesting. (Asia to Europe via Mongolia/Siberia/Russia/Scandinavia) another event that was a success, but so far a one off. if ATC was organized for it with sufficient staff to man the positions, I'm sure a Europe - Brazil/Caribbean event would be very popular. Joaquin Blanco Posted March 17, 2017 at 09:40 AM Author Posted March 17, 2017 at 09:40 AM It is difficult for them to organize any major event because in the South the numbers of active "flying" members is just not there when you consider the size of the continent and its population. So what my post was trying to point out is that in order to bring more activity it wouldn't be a bad idea to arrange some event perhaps with the [Mod - Happy Thoughts]istance of the Vatsim Hit Squad and to occasionally bring more life to this area of the world, and give those members from Central/South America and from other continents, the opportunity to enjoy experiencing something different. However if this is not feasible or possible, then let's leave it at that. Best regards Joaquin Blanco
Ernesto Alvarez 818262 Posted March 17, 2017 at 02:28 PM Posted March 17, 2017 at 02:28 PM id recommend starting with Federico Navarro. he can help as he'll know what the staffing levels are etc... get in contact with those areas, propose something, then they can decide if they have the staffing or if they need to involve the hit squad (last i remember the hit squad cant just takeover the airspace for an event without the approval of the local staff in regions that are already developed on the network)
Robert Shearman Jr Posted March 18, 2017 at 02:46 PM Posted March 18, 2017 at 02:46 PM if this is not feasible or possible, then let's leave it at that. I don't think it's a matter of it not being feasible or possible. I think it's a matter of needing someone who is p[Mod - Happy Thoughts]ionate about making it happen to invest the time and effort to organize it. Posting "someone should {...}" on the forums is probably not going to make it a reality. If you're p[Mod - Happy Thoughts]ionate enough about seeing it come about, you're probably the ideal candidate to put it together. Figure out what regions you want the event to take place in, talk to the VATSIM facilities that would need to staff it, find a date and timeframe they can commit to, then give the event a name and publish it on every event calendar you can find, and start actively recruiting pilots to participate. Expect turnout to be meager the first time around, but if everyone has fun, word of mouth will travel in preparation for the next time you do it. But all that ain't gonna happen by itself! Cheers, -R.
