A Few Questions From a Newbie

I couldn't locate a "Newbie" Forum, but this forum seems most appropriate.

I started flying in FSX a month ago. Learned about ILS landings, VFR/IFR flight, and about most of the buttons and switches in my choice aircraft . Most of my flights (and the aircraft I am most comfortable with) are in the default Bombardier crj-700. I have of course been using the default GPS to get me around, and a week ago I learned about routes/waypoints and how to program them into my GPS. I know little about approach procedures other than vectors for ILS and Visual approaches, nor do I know about departure procedures. Aswell as I have little knowledge about SIDS and STARS. And have never even looked at the FMC.

I know, I know I am a newbie but I am super interested in VATSIM and really want to preform a first flight sometime soon.

My main question is, what is necessary to know before preforming a successful, professional first flight on VATSIM?

Do I really need an FMC or can I stick with my GPS?

I have read most of the pilot's resource center pages but are there any more good tutorials out there? (I am more of a visual learner)

Thanks for any for any feedback that helps me have a successful first flight.

-Jack

The PRC gives a nice bulleted list of items that are "minimum expectations of VATSIM Pilots" on this page: Expectations and Requirements for Pilots.

Definitely take note of this one: "Ask questions or get clarifications if you do not understand." In other words, don't reply with "roger" to an instruction you didn't understand or don't think you'll be able to comply with.

That's up to you. Once you do get into flying SIDs and STARs, they can certainly help alleviate a lot of the workload. But no, you don't need one per se.

Other sources of training and/or testing your knowledge might be the Pilot Training Department or the various training/courses offered by some ARTCCs (e.g. see my signature for ZLA's... can't remember who else offers something similar).

Hi Jack,

I'm in more less the same position of you, again im a visual leaner. I posted a slightly different topic a few days ago but with the same request. It has had quite a debate but some of the answers have been very helpful. I'm a newbie as well, so maybe we could learn together! I am in no position to give you advice but I do suggest you check out what people have commented on my topic:
