Using vPilot but still with distortion

I use vPilot on FSX for VATSIM. When I go on, I have only understood 2 ATC operators. The distortion is static, deep, and makes quick pauses every second. I use direct sound on everything, turned VHF off, and turned up the volume. Nothing. Any fixes? I'll be on tomorrow at around 7 AM PST to check the replies.

Use wav instead of direct sound. That will make the sound card process the sound instead of the CPU.

It will increase "latency" (ie there is a slightly longer delay between the computer receiving the data, and the sound coming through the headset giving you a time delay, but the audio is likely going to be clearer since it was processed by the PC for longer)

Other suggestions: Reduce the volume of you simulator (especially engines), use a separate soundcard/usb headset than the device you play the engine/sim sounds through. etc.

Partially!

WAV = lower latency, fewer stutters/dropouts, lower audio quality

Directsound = higher latency, better audio quality but more liable to stutter.

The lower quality with WAV is noticeable if you are used to Directsound but may well be more intelligible if it solves your dropouts.

My suggestion is to turn the vPilot output volume down (potentially quite a long way). Mine generally hovers around 10-20% -- any more than that and I find I start getting high levels of distortion.

Personally I also find the audio slightly crisper and much less boomy with the VHF simulation on.

Thanks! I am currently using wav for my output and turned vhf on. I also turned the volume down to fifteen and it is quite bearable now!
