Hello, have been playing with flight sims for a while but only just started to get into it in more detail.

I have been flying VFR until recently, not trying to use SIDs/Stars and ILS.

One of my last flights, I was asked by center to make contact when in an airports airspace but I have no idea how to tell either for IFR or VFR? is this something the GPS unit can tell you or.....?

[standard caveat: In the USA] The default GPS actually does have airspaces on it (although possibly outdated), but your best reference in the VFR world is a sectional chart. http://www.skyvector.com. What I would implore you to do is to study airspace requirements. They will dictate when you need to be talking to someone. The down and dirty is in Cl[Mod - Happy Thoughts] A (above FL180), Cl[Mod - Happy Thoughts] B (Big busy airports and surroundings), Cl[Mod - Happy Thoughts] C (Moderate size/complexity airports and surroundings), and Cl[Mod - Happy Thoughts] D (Smaller/varying complex airfields), you need to be talking to ATC. Cl[Mod - Happy Thoughts] E and G do not require communication. That is very down and dirty, and there are different specifics to each. Here is a link to get you started: https://www.aopa.org/-/media/files/aopa/home/pilot-resources/asi/safety-advisors/sa02.pdf?la=en Have fun!

Brian,

Try plan-G from http://www.tasoftware.co.uk/

I use it, and works well to display my location in a standalone Program. Helps avoid CTA when flying VFR and squawking 1200.

I did post a lengthy reply but when I hit reply it error red and lost it all. Sorry not going to risk a second one...

Warning: always contact ATC if they send you a "contact me", simplies...

you can also use skyvector.com (most accurate only in the USA although it does have good maps for the world); use their 'WorldVFR' chart and it shows the airspaces.
