Kristoffer Heiselberg 9093 Posted December 31, 2004 at 04:11 AM Posted December 31, 2004 at 04:11 AM Hello, i'm just getting started here in VATSIM and was wondering if you have to study yourself to become and ATC or if an instructor is an option? I'm eager to getting started, but just wanted to make sure which options i have from the start. Also, i've joined the europe region, but messed up the [Mod - Happy Thoughts]ignment of the divison. I live in Greenland, but should i join the danish division or is there a division for Greenland as well?
Xavier Van Nieuwenhuyse 81 Posted December 31, 2004 at 11:04 AM Posted December 31, 2004 at 11:04 AM Hia, Danemark is part of the Scandinavian vACC and I guess, so is Greenland. Have a look here: http://www.vaccsca.org/ It's a great staff, and they will be able to help you out. Welcome aboard! Marek Pola 843115 Posted December 31, 2004 at 11:16 AM Posted December 31, 2004 at 11:16 AM Greenland is actually part of Canadian FIR even if it is part of Denmark otherwise. But Scandinavian vACC has a Letter Of Agreement (LOA) that we can provide ATC over Greenland. So I'm not sure which vACC you should belong to. I will send a mail to our Director (accsca1 at vaccsca dot org) and point him to this thread. You can also send a email to him if you wish. Tomas Johansson 812278 Posted December 31, 2004 at 12:21 PM Posted December 31, 2004 at 12:21 PM Hi! Happy to hear you are interested in becoming an ATC in Greenland. As Marek says, Greenland is a part of the Canadian division (VATCAN), so it is my understanding that VATCAN is where you should request ATC training. Scandinavian VACC has an agreement that our members can control on Greenland, but to my knowledge the default is still that controllers who wishes to control mainly in Greenland should be members of the canadian division (www.vatcan.org). If you experience any problems with this or have any further questions feel free to mail me. Best Regards, Tomas Johansson Director, Scandinavian VACC
Kristoffer Heiselberg 9093 Posted December 31, 2004 at 07:37 PM Author Posted December 31, 2004 at 07:37 PM Thanks for the quick replies, really appreciate it! I've thought about it and I would prefer to join the danish divison instead of greenland under the canadian division. Then I could always get the training to be en ATC in Greenland later. At this time, I'm more familiar with the danish airspace. Actually I'm an AFIS-operator here in Greenland, so I'm quite familiar with the environment, as you can figure. But since I found VATSIM on the internet, I've been really eager to see if I could started with it But alright, where do I start from now. Who do I contact to get started and should I contact an instructor? Thank you for the help again and a Happy New Year to all. Marek Pola 843115 Posted January 1, 2005 at 10:38 PM Posted January 1, 2005 at 10:38 PM Kristoffer, You are very welcome to get training in Scandinavian vACC if you want, since you after all live in one of our countries and will probably want to control in Scandinavia! To be able to control, you need to have Student training first to get your Student rating. Before you can do that, you need to be a member of Vatsim - which you obviously already are. Next, you need to be member of the European Region - which I understand you are already also. So, go to our home page www.vaccsca.org and use the menu "Sign Up" to be a member of Scandianvian vACC. Once you are a member, sign on our homepage by getting a p[Mod - Happy Thoughts]word to our home page (different p[Mod - Happy Thoughts]word than your Vatsim p[Mod - Happy Thoughts]word), go to the Training menu and apply for training. When you have done that, I will [Mod - Happy Thoughts]ign a instructor to you that will give you basic training so you can control on your own. We have instructors in all scandinavian languages, I guess Danish will suite you? If you have any further questions or if anything of the above doesn't work, please contact me on email address accsca14 at vaccsca.org. I'm also on the Staff menu on our home page. Good luck! Kristoffer Heiselberg 9093 Posted January 2, 2005 at 01:42 AM Author Posted January 2, 2005 at 01:42 AM Marek, I've signed up on www.vaccsca.org, so I'm just waiting on the p[Mod - Happy Thoughts]word to be sent by email. But yes, a danish speaking instructor would be preferred. Again, thanks for the help, I appreciate it. Regards, Kris Heiselberg
Marek Pola 843115 Posted January 2, 2005 at 09:47 AM Posted January 2, 2005 at 09:47 AM Kristoffer, I was maybe a bit unclear. To get a p[Mod - Happy Thoughts]word to our home page, you need to use the Log On menu and then press the "I have forgotten my p[Mod - Happy Thoughts]word" link. But it can take a day or two when you have signed up until you actually become a member - please have patience! Regards Marek
Kristoffer Heiselberg 9093 Posted January 3, 2005 at 02:07 AM Author Posted January 3, 2005 at 02:07 AM Marek, I'm a little confused now about getting my p[Mod - Happy Thoughts]word. When I go to the Log On menu, a CID is required. So far I only have the original VATSIM ID. Is CID the new ID that I'm gonna get? Because the VATSIM ID won't work in that Log On menu. Marek Pola 843115 Posted January 3, 2005 at 04:43 AM Posted January 3, 2005 at 04:43 AM It's the original VATSIM ID. But it won't work until you are a member, but I see in our Members list that you are a member now. If it still doesn't work, please send me an email! Kristoffer Heiselberg 9093 Posted January 3, 2005 at 05:38 AM Author Posted January 3, 2005 at 05:38 AM Marek, Thanks for your help, the login with my VATSIM ID worked and I've gotten my p[Mod - Happy Thoughts]word. Now, I've tried to request for training, but I have to p[Mod - Happy Thoughts] a test first, to enroll for training as a student controller. This test, is there an agenda that specifies what I need to know excactly or should I just self study for the test? Also, it says that I have to be an Observer for atleast 7 days before I can request for an upgrade. Now I [Mod - Happy Thoughts]ume that there are some things I have to know as an observer, before I can go on and take the test to start as a student controller. I know I'm asking quite a few questions, but it's just a bit difficult, to find the answers on the different pages and know where to start, as a newbie. But again, thanks for the help, I appreciate it. Regards, Kris
Marek Pola 843115 Posted January 3, 2005 at 06:11 AM Posted January 3, 2005 at 06:11 AM Kris, Yes, much of the studying is carried out as self studies and by picking up tips from other controllers. But you will also get a instructor that will do practical training with you and that will go through the theoretical stuff with you. The test is not difficult but the questions can be tricky so don't take it lightly. The answer to the questions can be found at www.vateud-td.org but the material there is very big, much is for the higher ratings only, so don't be discouraged! Also have a look at the ASRC manual which can be found at http://www.asrc.info/. If you have experience with online flying you will know most of the questions anyway. If you don't have experience, that's not a problem. If you have problems with the test you can discuss the details with me, send me an email. It's correct that you should be a observer first to get some first hand experience what controlling is all about. Install ASRC, configure voice and do some listening, it's great fun! You'll find the so called ASRC sector file on our homepage, under ATC Downloads. If you have any problems configuring ASRC - you guessed it - send me an email!
