Westbound from Europe, the general rule is that if your origin airfield is west of 03W, your Oceanic clearance will immediately follow your regular, domestic IFR clearance while on the ground. Otherwise, you obtain the Oceanic clearance once airborne. Is that what you're asking?

Cheers,

You need to request oceanic clearance at latest, 30 minutes from entry into oceanic airspace (be it a NAT or random routing). As Rob said, at certain airports, you will need to request and obtain clearance before departing.

Hi Xi,

also have a look here: https://aerosavvy.com/north-atlantic-tracks/ (note that in VATSIM we rarely use CPDLC, but some ATCOs do use it!)

VATSIM UK have prepared a short intro that is tailored to VATSIM's environment: https://vatsim.uk/oceanic-procedures/

For clearances from Canada you'll only get them on the ground before departure if they are located sufficiently close to the boundary to the NAT HLA (used to be called "MNPSA").

https://www.skybrary.aero/index.php/North_Atlantic_Operations_-_Airspace

https://www.skybrary.aero/index.php/North_Atlantic_Operations_-_ATC_Clearance

At airports situated close to oceanic boundaries or within the NAT Region, it may be necessary to obtain the Oceanic Clearance before departure. These procedures are detailed in relevant State AIPs. On the east side of the NAT, this will apply to departures from all Irish airfields, all UK airfields west of 2° 30'W and all French Airfields west of zero degrees longitude. Aircraft departing from Canadian airfields such as Goose Bay, Deer Lake, Gander and St. Johns must also obtain their Oceanic Clearance prior to departure.

On VATSIM it's hard to get accurate time prediction from pilots, so if somewhat busy it's rather unlikely the atlantic controller will want to give clearance till after departure, as they know that whatever estimates given are unlikely to be near what will actually happen
