Chris Honke Posted January 2, 2018 at 12:25 AM Posted January 2, 2018 at 12:25 AM When online in Vatsim, what is seen by others of my plane? Example, are my taxi or landing lights seen. ..liveries, type of plane? What do others see? Cheers. Heavy Metal Driver.
Board of Governors Don Desfosse Posted January 2, 2018 at 02:07 AM Board of Governors Posted January 2, 2018 at 02:07 AM That depends largely on what clients are being used. For liveries and aircraft type, it depends largely on model matching, the AI that you have to see others with, and the AI others have to see you with. I wrote the following snippet for the vPilot Tips, Tricks, FAQ and Troubleshooting Guide a few years ago: Now, for other people's aircraft, that relies on something called model matching. Model matching relies on you both having AI (artificial intelligence) aircraft (or default), and corresponding model matching rules. For example, many folks when just starting out download many of the freeware World of AI (WOAI) AI aircraft. Once you have those downloaded, and then once you have them installed, vPilot will search your flight sim installation for the AI aircraft you just downloaded/installed. Remember that the "goodness" of the model matching of course relies on what you have for AI, plus the "goodness" of how people log onto the network. If someone logs on with an invalid aircraft type (e.g., ZZZZ or B738L or 777, etc.) no one (without some heroic measures/band aids) will be able to see them in what they "think" they are flying.... For a little more on model matching, I suggest you read this: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=67933&p=483739 Now, for other things like lights, etc., if both members are using vPilot (both you and the aircraft you are looking at), and if the aircraft support it, you'll be able to see lights, gear, flaps, etc. all operating. I don't know much about XSquawkBox for XPlane, so can't comment on that. FSInn and SquawkBox do not support seeing things like gear, flaps, lights, etc. (to the best of my recollection -- it's been a long time since I've been paying much attention to either of those). Randy Tyndall 1087023 Posted January 2, 2018 at 09:43 PM Posted January 2, 2018 at 09:43 PM ...FSInn...(does) not support seeing things like gear, flaps, lights, etc. (to the best of my recollection -- it's been a long time since I've been paying much attention to either of those). I have been a user of FSInn since 2008 in both FS2004 and FSX and I have been seeing gear going up and down, flaps extending/retracting, and aircraft lights to include landing lights going on/off in other online users' aircraft since day one. Ross Carlson Posted January 2, 2018 at 09:51 PM Posted January 2, 2018 at 09:51 PM FSInn has always had a proprietary method for sharing lights, flaps, etc. between users of FSInn, but it does not work between an FSInn user and a Squawkbox, XSquawkbox, or vPilot user. vPilot uses a method that employs a standard VATSIM protocol extension which was developed in conjunction with the swift developers, so it will work between vPilot users, between swift users, and between vPilot and swift users. So Don, if I understand correctly, vPilot doesn’t only use VATSIM servers to grab basic data like position, altitude, heading, etc... but also some other servers for ‘secondary’ data such as flaps, lights, etc...?
