I've never used Vatsim but would like to at least make a start.

My question is...

Is it possible/allowed to spawn somewhere discrete and out of the way spot at an airfield, to just sit and listen to live Vatsim comms?

Yup, perfectly fine. Just connect on a ramp somewhere, no need to file a flightplan either.

Not only is it allowed, but it's encouraged!

Connected to Vatsim for the very first time last night, on a stand at EGKK, only to look up out the window, to see 747 heading straight towards me about 50ft away! Must've frightened the poor pilot to death lol. Disconnected before impact.

If that was anyone here, sorry dude;-)

As long as you were on a stand and not in the middle of an open taxiway, it wasn't your fault -- it only serves as a reminder to make sure collision detection is turned off.
