Brad Littlejohn Posted June 14, 2006 at 12:18 AM Posted June 14, 2006 at 12:18 AM On a related note, In looking over the ZAK website, I see the map of ZAK's airspace and neighbouring sectors; one of them being ZAN. Does ZAN cover ZAN Oceanic inclusive, or does ZAK cover that? BL. Brad Littlejohn ZLA Senior Controller

It's been a while since i was directly involved with the KZAK but as I recall Oakland Oceanic did not control the Anchorage Oca airspace. Ethan Klapper 884347 Posted June 14, 2006 at 09:58 PM Posted June 14, 2006 at 09:58 PM I highly recommend everyone who's qualified to at least check this out. ZAK is pretty fun and it's a different type of controlling than you're used to. In my book, different = interesting! Ethan Klapper 884347 Posted June 14, 2006 at 10:27 PM Posted June 14, 2006 at 10:27 PM How to Become a Pacific Oceanic Controller 1. New controllers are always welcomed. You do not have to become a visiting controller of any ARTCC, the Oceanic FIR is independent of any ARTCC. All Oceanic controllers are "visiting controllers". 2. Understand that Oceanic controlling is non-radar controlling. You can not issue radar vectors. While we use a sector file and radar client such as ASRC or Policy page. 3. Once you feel you understand the basics, you may contact an Oceanic Mentor or Instructor and email a request to schedule an over-the-shoulder (OTS) session to check out your technique and knowledge of oceanic procedures. Be aware that any and all material in the tutorials is fair game, including sections of the 7110.65 that relate to oceanic control. 4. After completing your OTS session, if, in the judgment of the Oceanic Mentor or Instructor, you have displayed an understanding of the FIR policies, SOPs, LOAs, and non-radar controlling techniques, you will be added to the roster and may open the position unsupervised. ...and 3. Per VATSIM policy, Oceanic Controllers must hold at least an S-3 rating. Ethan Klapper VATUSA13 VATUSA Deputy Events Director
