Raymond Jornd 940443 Posted July 30, 2018 at 02:01 AM Posted July 30, 2018 at 02:01 AM Hey, VATSIM! I'm a former S-3 controller (ZOB) and virtual pilot that put the hobby away for a few years to pursue life goals. Well, I'm feeling it's time to dust off everything and jump back in. Before I do, I'm sure a lot has changed while I've been away. I was using ASRC before but I see that new clients have been released. Also, I'm sure that my original ARTCC has dropped me from their roster due to inactivity. What do I need to get to start controlling again? Who do I need to talk to? I'd like to change ARTCC's to perhaps ZFW as well. Any help is greatly appreciated in advance.
Evan Reiter Posted July 30, 2018 at 02:42 AM Posted July 30, 2018 at 02:42 AM It's been some time since I've had to start the "new controller" process, so (anyone else reading) feel free to correct as needed! First step would be to login to VATUSA (www.vatusa.net). Under "My VATUSA", you should see an option to join a facility. If you don't, there will be information about why you are unable to currently join another facility. You will likely need to request to transfer to whichever ARTCC (e.g., ZFW). Typically, it's a good practice to explain why you're returning from activity and to give the incoming ARTCC a sense of what you're about, and that you plan to be around. Obviously, training is a major investment in time from volunteers, so it's nice to know when that investment is appreciated by new students. Your incoming facility will be able to provide more information about radar client and training. Most of us in the United States are using VRC today: http://www1.metacraft.com/VRC/. Your facility will also likely have instructions for configuring VRC and getting it set up as part of the orientation process. Alright friends from VATUSA...what did I forget? Raymond Jornd 940443 Posted July 30, 2018 at 02:46 AM Author Posted July 30, 2018 at 02:46 AM Thank you, Evan. I've found the Facebook page for ZFW and reached out to them there. I'll download VRC and follow the suggestions you gave. It's been some time since I've had to start the "new controller" process, so (anyone else reading) feel free to correct as needed! Kirk Christie Posted July 31, 2018 at 07:44 AM Posted July 31, 2018 at 07:44 AM Also, I'm sure that my original ARTCC has dropped me from their roster due to inactivity. Something I hope that VATSIM puts the brakes on, and soon. There is no requirement for an ARTCC to hold a roster of incactive/active controllers, there no such thing as an inactive controller in the eyes of VATSIM your rating is earned once and earned for life, no one is allowed to prevent you from controlling in A division for which you hold a rating. Divisions are required to maintatn a list of who is endorsed for Major Airports, Special centres and visiting controlers only. However, when you've been away from the hobby for so long that your VATSIM ID goes into an inactive state, that can contribute to the issue.
