The main features of the Russian airspace are QFE and meters below transition level.

QFE is the barometric altimeter setting that causes an altimeter to read zero on the threshold of the active runway.

QNH causes the altimeter to read airfield elevation when on the ground. Elevations of Moscow airports are about 600 feet.

That is why if you use QNH instead of QFE, your altitude will be different up to 600 feet.

In Jeppesen charts, you can find “Alt/Height Conversion Table” for every Russian airport.

There are tables for Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo that take part in the event.

qfe-qnh-ddee.png.bb4b80fce48d1cb1eaf5b947beaba091.png

The first column is what altitude you must maintain by QNH, second and third are heights by QFE in feet and meters resp.

ATC will give you third number – height in meters.

So, if ATC said “by QFE 1001 descend to height 600 meters” you can:

• set on your altimeter QFE 1001 hPa and set 2000 feet on MCP

OR

• request from controller QNH (or take it from METAR) and set 2600 feet on MCP

The difference is more than half of vertical separation standard.

We wish you a successful and enjoyable event!
